The Relationship of press and power (1950-1954)

ABSTRAKT THE RELATIONSHIP OF PRESS AND POWER (1950-1954) The press in Turkey was born as a legitimacy instrument different from the west. The opposing press came out with the first " Jön Türk" opposition. This progress brought censor applications together with it. During Abdiilhamid II period having been shown the reasons of interior and exterior conditions which the country in, the censor applications were hardened. The first "Press Law" was put into force in the II. Constitutinoal Governvent. However, party centered press replaced palace centered press in this period. During the National Fighting, especially the Anatolian Press was been in harmony with the Ankara centered political authority for the first time. After declaration of the republic, opposing press began to develop together with political opposition. However opposing press was taken a very strict under control with Takrir-i Sükûn Law together with political oppocition. Press indepence was limited with "Press Law" accepted in 1 93 1. Press independence which began to develop with "Press Law" accepted in 1 93 1 was limited with the new laws down. The liberalism winds which blew after the Post World War affected Turkey, too. Political opposition and opposing press took courage. This process brought a bloodless power exchange in 1950. DP (Democratic Party) dilated press independence with the new Press Law laid down. However, after awhile the initatives of the political power which limited the independence of the press started.The initatives which limit the independence of the press generally arise from the political authority. However not only non self-control of the press and also being depented on the political power from the point of finance prepared a ground for censor applications. For this reason, press should build a democratic by itself to reduce and try to be aciyil society institution whose dependence to the political power from the point of finance reduce and doing public service. The government definitely shouldn't give permission to the trend of monopolization of the press, shouldn't take into consideration that it is an ungiven up institution for the democratic developments of the press.
