A research on employee profile at ship recycling sector in Turkey

Özet (EN)

Ship recycling is withdrawal of the vessels from voyages which completed their economic life span to be demolished for the purpose of recycling. Technically, whole process is to cut off in pieces on the shore, at the pier or at dry dock. Playing an active role in protecting ecological balance, ship recycling is considered by International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a "green industry". This study, addressing the ship recycling activities which is located only in Aliaga in Turkey and working personnel in this sector. It has been conducted to point business organizations the current situation regarding staff and working conditions to determine the solutions to the problems that may be encountered in the future. Through literature studies, it has been understood that the sector was focused more likely on regarding environmental pollution issues by international and national scopes and it has been also observed that human labour power is ignored in this sector. Starting from current status, a field study has been carried out to investigate ship recycling emplyees. In the study of research, factors which are related to socio-economic characteristics of employees, working and health conditions are analysed through surveys and all the observations and evaluations have been presented into forward.
