Rice production, consumption and marketing in Turkey

In this study, Turkey rice and rice market, production, foreign trade, demand, prices, marketing structure and policies are evaluated. Paddy and rice production in Turkey has been increasing in recent years. In 1990, 138 thousand tons of rice was produced from 230 thousand tons of rice and in 2017, 540 thousand tons of rice was obtained from 900 thousand tons of rice. However, the cultivation area and yield increased during the same years. While the production increased with the support of the state for paddy farming, consumption increased in parallel with this. Domestic consumption, which was 557 thousand tons in 2008, increased to 750 thousand tons in 2017. paddy and rice production can not meet the growing needs of domestic consumption in Turkey and needed amounts are taken from abroad. In other words, Turkey is a dependent country on paddy and rice. The most important reasons for this situation are high input prices and costs. On the other hand, the most important problem in rice production is the lack of irrigation water. Turkey, with more efficient methods to solve the problems in the paddy-rice market can come to a country that can be self-sufficient in the future. Also in this study, SWOT analysis was performed to evaluate Turkey's paddy-rice market. In addition, solutions were offered for the current problems of the market.
