Teachers? and instructors? views about the problems experienced in foreign language teaching in Turkey and foreign language schools as a proposal for solution

The general aim of this research is to identify teachers? and instructors? views about the problems experienced in foreign language teaching in Turkey and Foreign Language Schools as a proposal for solution. In the research, firstly, history of foreign language teaching in Turkey and methods and approaches used in foreign language teaching are dealt with the aim of recognize language teaching methods, determine how frequent they are used in Turkey and identify in which environments they could be more efficient. Teachers? and instructors? opinions about foreign language teaching are identified in a scale. For this reason, a scale consisting of Likert type items and open ended questions prepared by the researcher and whose validity and reliability are provided was applied to 120 teachers and instructors teaching in state and private institutions in the provinces of Bursa, Balıkesir, Elazığ, Mersin. In this respect, the research submitting quantitive characteristics, also includes qualitative aspects.In the research, two types of datum are obtained from teachers and instructors about the problems experienced in foreign language teaching in Turkey and foreign language schools as a proposal for solution. Answers given to Likert type items are anaylzed through arithmetic mean and standard deviation. Percentage and frequency techniques are used in the analysis of personal information. In the analysis of teachers? and instructors? opinions according to variables, ?t? and anova test are used. Teachers? and instructors? answers to open ended questions are analyzed with the methods like thematic analysis and interpretation.Analysis results of datum are given under two topics as the problems experienced in foreign language teaching and proposals for solution.The Problems Experienced in Foreign Language Teaching in Turkey?It is hard to mention about a suitable environment for foreign language teaching in Turkey. For this reason language teaching methods and approaches can not be used effectively except Grammar-Translation Method (GTM). However, GTM is pretty insufficient in language teaching.?In Turkey, foreign language teaching starts at late ages.?There is a serious material problem in language teaching in Turkey.?In Turkey, obligation of having language lessons makes foreign language classes crowded. And classes? being crowded affects language teaching badly.?Students? inefficiency with their native language, Turkish, affects language teaching badly.?Hours of foreign language lessons in curriculums are insufficient.?Foreign language teaching is carried out exam focused in Turkey (especially in primary school). This situation limits students? improvement of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.Foreign Language Teaching Orientated Suggestions?Suitable classroom environments, at most 15 students, equipped with necessary eqjuipment and materials should be arranged for foreign language teaching.?Foreign language teaching should start at earlier ages in primary school, and it should be optional instead of compulsory in secondary and higher education.Key Words: The Problems of Foreign Language Teaching, Foreign Language Teaching Methods, Foreign Language Schools
