Determination of academic performance measurement criteria for the academicians in Turkish higher education

Performance management, which is one of the human resources management systems, is used as an effective system to mobilize employees according to the management goals. It is hard to say that performance management and its systems, which are commonly used in numerous industries, are also used to same extent in institutions of higher education. The academic performance is accepted as a value of the overall measurement of different criteria of the academic staff. While the correct criteria are used, the measurement of academic performance will result valuable systems. The aim of this study is to show that the numbers and criteria which are used for the ranking of universities can also be used for the determination of the performance criteria of academic staff in institutions of higher education in Turkey and also to confirm by literature survey that the academic performance criteria and applications which are established according to this method, can have a direct impact on the overall success of the institutions of higher education. Although the number of the research on the performance criteria of instructor at the higher school institutions within the scope of the academic performance in the literature is not so high, it seems to be among the issues that have started to become popular thanks to the recent researches. In order to determine the possible criteria for use in the performance assessment of academic staff, performance management system among the essential functions of human resources management, academic performance and criteria used for ranking systems of world universities have been studied. As a result, it has been determined that some of the criteria used for ranking systems of world university can be used in the academic performance assessment, whereas these criteria are considerably significant and relational for the academic performance.
