University students gender roles and attitudes regardindg violence against women: The sample of Dicle University

It is predicted that there are gender attitudes and some socio-demographic variables that affect violence against women, which is a common issue in our society. This study was conducted cross-sectionally in order to determine the attitudes of university students towards violence against women and gender roles and the factors that affect these attitudes. The sample of the research consists of 404 male and female university students who are senior students at Dicle University's Ziya Gökalp Education, Medical, Law, Theology and Literature Schools. University students' attitudes towards violence against women and gender roles are examined in terms of various variables such as gender, average monthly income level of the family, education level of parents, working status of parents, exposure to domestic violence, kinship status of parents, witnessing domestic violence, place of birth, high school, faculty, number of siblings, awareness for types of violence against women, estimated attitude of the family towards violence. As the data collection tool, "Sociodemographic Information Form", "Questionnaire on Attitude Towards Violence Against Women" which is a questionnaire form consisting of 19 questions, including attitudes towards violence against women previously used by Kanbay, Işık, Yavuzaslan, Keleş (2012), which was reached as a result of literature survey, "Gender Roles Attitude Scale" developed by Zeyneloglu (2008) (TCRTÖ) and some attitude statements were used. The questionnaire form was applied to the participants between December 1-12, 2015 and data were assessed by using the mean, standard deviation, and percentile numbers; Ki-kare, Fisher's Exact, Speraman's Rho, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U test on SPSS for Windows 16.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) computer software. As a result of the research, it was found that there is a meaningful relationship between violence against women and attitudes towards gender roles. Gender, faculty, the number of siblings, taking gender-related courses, preference for daughter, gender mainstreaming are found to be related to violence attitudes towards women. It was also found that perceived reactions to exposure to domestic violence, witnessing domestic violence and doing domestic violence are related to perceived reaction of a family for violence against women.
