Art and life of Utku Varlık

The subject of this thesis is to analyze Utku Varlık's sense of art and to create a classification by examining the themes seen in his works in categories. First, almost all of the works of the artist that have survived to the present day were examined and separated according to their subjects, and instead of giving a catalog of the works, a chronological selection was presented in line with the emerging themes. Having entered the Academy in 1960 and started his art life with printmaking, Varlık's artistic understanding has changed since the mid-1970s. Since the printmaking made before this date were burned by the artist, we do not have many of his works at hand. For this reason, the main subject of the study is the artist's understanding of art and his works, which have changed since the mid-1970s. In the first part of the study, go about the scope and purpose, methods and limits. Then, in order to introduce to the subject and understand the work better, the Early Republican period painting art and the artist groups established in this period are mentioned. Then, the political and cultural environment of Turkey after 1950, which also includes the active years of the artist, is mentioned. During these years, the effects of the political environment on the art of painting and how it changed this art were examined. Afterwards, the main subject of the study, the life and art of Utku Varlık, was examined in detail and his works were grouped thematically. Finally, the evaluation and conclusion part was written by considering the findings from the study and the study was completed. As a result, it has been detected that Utku Varlık, who produced works in various styles in the early years of his art, be dwelled on a single style since the mid-1970s and he continues to produce work as part of same technique and same subject.
