Comparison of demographic characteristics of vertebral artery stenting cases by gender

Despite the advances in the treatment of stroke, deaths from stroke are ranked second in the world. Epidemiological studies show that approximately 20% of the strokes are caused by the posterior system, and 25% by the diseases of vertebral artery and basilar artery. There are also differences between the genders here and patients were examined in terms of these differences in our study. For the study, the file records of the patients who underwent vertebral artery stenting in the Neurology Clinic of Gaziantep University Medical Faculty Hospital between the dates of January 2018 and March 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. In statistical evaluations, the relation of the variables such as sociodemographic characteristics, age, marital status, the position of the stented artery, the presence of symptoms, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, heart diseases, smoking, use of alcohol, history of stroke was examined according to gender in recognition of the demographic characteristics. In the analysis of our study, in terms of the stenosis percentages of the patients and whether they were symptomatic, no significant difference according to the gender was found (p>0,05). Again, no significant relation was found in terms of the frequency of right-left vertebral stenting and the gender difference (p>0,05). While hypertension is the most common risk with the rate of %66,3, the presence of it was found to be %60 in men and %82,1 in women. Statistically, the presence of hypertension according to gender was found to be significant (p<0,05). Besides, smoking was found significant in men compared to women (p<0,05). Again, there was a significant connection between smoking and being married (p<0,05). As a result, it was observed that there were differences in the demographic chararacteristics of the vertebral artery stent cases according to gender. Starting from this, with this study, we aim to contribute to the scientific studies of the future and the medical studies for the prevention of stroke.
