Virgina Woolf ve Arnold Bennett'in derlem dilbilim analizi: Dildeki cinsiyetçilik

Prof. Dr. Meltem Muşlu June 2021, 103 pages Granger (2002) defines corpus linguistics as "a linguistic methodology founded on the use of electronic collections of naturally occurring texts, viz. corpora" (p. 4).Thanks to the advanced technology of today's world, corpus linguistics (CL) provides analysis of a great quantity of data not only in linguistic studies, but also in literature by uncovering meanings of literary texts that have not been discussed or detected before. It does not aim at consuming conventional theories in literature; vice versa, it validates literary theories by supporting those using empirical data. Moreover, in literature, CL is a useful analysis method to analyze sexist discourses as stated by Mills and Mullany (2011) "with corpus linguistics, we can develop a form of analysis of sexism to examine the way that emotive connotations accrue over time to words associated with women" (p. 24). As a complement of feminist stylistics theory, this study aimed at examining the discourses of Woolf and Bennett in terms of sexist language through a corpus-based analysis. Virginia Woolf's The Voyage Out (1915) Mrs. Dalloway (1925) To the Light House (1927) and Arnold Bennet's Anna of the Five Towns (1902), The Old Wives Tale (1908), Helen with the High Hand (1910) were used when creating the corpora. The concordances of the gendered binary oppositions: girl-boy, woman-man, lady-gentleman, male-female, spinster-bachelor, master-mistress and Mr. – Mrs. were mainly anaysed in terms of sexist language aspect and the results were evaluated in accordance with feminist literary criticism theories.
