Abstract (EN)

The end of the Roman Empire changed the demographic structure of Italy and its surrounding regions. The Goths, an important Germanic group in the area, also attempted to establish their own kingdoms, although their rule was short-lived. We first encounter their activities as they advanced from the Baltic Sea to the Danube region and then to the Iberian Peninsula. The Goths divided into two branches in 291: the Western Goths (Tervingi-Vesi) and the Eastern Goths (Greuthungi-Ostrogothi).. These names were in use for a short period until around 400, and after that, only the Tervingi-Greuthungi pair survived in heroic songs, while the Vesier-Ostrogot pair, later adapted as Wesgoten-Ostrogoten by Cassiodorus in the early sixth century, remained unchanged until the "improvement" as West Goths-East Goths. Tervingi is a term used for forest people, while Greuthungi refers to people living in the steppes. Therefore, we can examine the geographical separation of these two branches based on their origins.. These names later became the subjects of only heroic epics. The Bernli Dietrich, who appears in the medieval epic Nibelungen, set in the ancient city of Worms on the banks of the Rhine River, is Theodoric the Great. This thesis focuses on understanding the actions of the Visigoths in Spain and their place within the broader Gothic community.. Moreover, this study looks at how they merged their culture with Roman culture in the Spanish population.. In the first chapter of this thesis, we explore the Gothic communities in Scandinavia and their origins.. The Visigoths in Spain are the focus of the second chapter, which looks at their activities in the region.. In the third and final chapter, we present the conclusion of the thesis within a cause-and-effect relationship. The thesis examines the Visigoths from social, political, and economic perspectives to understand how they established a socio-cultural structure. It then presents the conclusion within a cause-and-effect relationship..
