Assessment of visual perception in re-used adaptive industrial spaces: İzmi̇r Historical Coal Gas Factory

Space, with its tangible and intangible character, constitutes the experience field of person. But in time, due to inadequacy or invalidity in physical functions, it lose this character. In this case, it is proposed to give a function to keep it alive with saving its original character, instead of blot out of its entity. At this point, the space which is designed for new function, have to keep in touch with its users not only in physical extent, but also conceptual, perceptual and emotional extents. "İzmir Historical Gas - Oil Factory", which has turned into "cultural center" with a functional transform, is assessed on the relation with its users in terms of physical, conceptual, perceptual and emotional extents. In this assessment, three main layers, including visual perception of the city, visual perception of the landscape, visual perception of the interior are determined. Within these layers; visual perception of the city separates into three sublayers which are accessibility, readability and usability; landscape of the factory and the interior of cafe separates into nine sub layers. As a result of observations and survey studies in accordance with these signified layers; proposals are bring forward about the potential improvements through space components at the physical, conceptual, perceptual and emotional relation of factory with the city and the relation of landscape and especially cafe with its users.
