Examination of the teaching process of students with mental disability: Teacher and parent opinions

The main purpose of this research is to examine the teaching processes of students with intellectual disabilities in rehabilitation centers by consulting their teachers and parents. The study group of the research, in which the phenomenological design was used, consists of 20 parents and 20 teachers who teach students with intellectual disabilities in the rehabilitation centers in Siirt. Criterion sampling, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used. As a data collection tool in the research, a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher was applied to the participant group. The interview form was prepared separately for teachers and parents. The data obtained here were subjected to content analysis. As a result of the research; It has been seen that teachers mostly give priority to daily life skills, do activities and studies to show and make them do, rehabilitation centers contribute to students, students experience problems due to their disability and parents' attitudes. Teachers tried to solve the problems they experienced by trying to get support from their families, and they wanted students to be given training on social skills. According to the opinions of the parents, it was seen that more education support training was provided in the rehabilitation centers, these centers contributed to their children, the students experienced problems due to their disability, and this situation negatively affected their social life. Parents tried to solve the problems they experienced by trying to understand their children's feelings and to contribute to their children's teaching process in terms of communication, interaction, psychomotor, perception and memory skills. In addition, it was concluded that the parents wanted their children to be trained in social life skills.
