A 6DOF nonlinear simulation of a satellite missile

Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sohayb ABDULKERIM September 2021 79 pages Recently, it has been witnessed a significant increase in the number of controlled missiles for various purposes specifically for launching satellites. To validate the performance of an air vehicle, and to carry out the designing process of the controller and stabilizer, missiles need to be perfectly modeled and simulated. The literature is very meager in the simulation of missiles using 6DOF model. Therefore, this project simulates the missile using 6DOF by SIMULINK. To perform the simulation, dynamical equations using newton's second law were derived. The resulted dynamical equations, a set of nonlinear time-variant and coupled differential equations, were simulated using MATLAB without the need for a linearization process. The thrust vector and inertia tensor were defined using tabular data which functions on time, while the aerodynamics and stability derivatives were also determined by tables that function to Mach's number, angle of attack, and slide slip angles. The simulation process was validated by comparing the resulted trajectory for a case study with a similar one found in the literature. The comparison showed a good agreement. The resulted simulator allowed to design and tuning of PID controller using the Ziegler Nichols method. This approach showed high flexibility and efficiency in finding missile trajectory and designing controller and stabilizer.

Computational fluid dynamics analysis of recent synthetic jet actuator designs

In this study, a loudspeaker type synthetic jet actuator (SJA) is scrutinized in two dimensional numerical analysis. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are employed in ANSYS FLUENT flow solver module according to Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and Unsteady RANS (URANS) with SST k-ω turbulence model closure. Loudspeaker type SJA is located at the maximum thickness, 30 % of the chord length line, of the airfoil. CFD analysis are employed at various angles of attacks at 1500-2200 Hz from selected reference studies and "flow separation angle of attack" is investigated for both SJA-off and SJA-on cases of the airfoil. CFD analysis are performed according to selected reference studies, at Reynolds numbers of 384000, 580000 and 1760000 are executed using the UDF code at transient conditions and the lift coefficient vs. angle of attack characteristics of SJA-on cases are compared with SJA-off cases. Lastly, the prevention/delay of boundary layer separation and lift enhancement by SJA are discussed under different configurations. According to the results, the lift force coefficient effectively increased at moderate Reynolds number, the obtained result at "1 mm orifice diameter, 2200 Hz frequency" configuration stood out as the best enhancement compared to other studies.

Design of unmanned air vehicle (UAV) for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL)

In recent years, Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft have gained significant attention due to their versatility and capability to operate in constrained spaces. This thesis focuses on the comprehensive design and analysis of a VTOL aircraft with tilt wing technology and its propeller system. A comparative evaluation of various existing VTOL designs from the literature has been conducted to propose a novel aircraft design. Each component of the aircraft and the selected materials were carefully optimized for efficiency and performance. The worm drive mechanism was chosen for the tilt mechanism, enabling the VTOL feature. Different types of propellers were employed on the wings and at the rear of the aircraft to achieve the required thrust during vertical take-off and landing and to maintain moment balance. In the preliminary design, a total of six propellers are chosen, with two 3-bladed propellers at the rear and four 2-bladed propellers on the wings. Then, the performance of the propellers on the wing under various conditions was evaluated by performing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses and optimum configurations were determined for different number of propellers scenarios.

Investigation of the damage resistance of laminated composites under the explosion loads

The significance and usage area of composite material tends to increase not only aviation industry but also defense, automotive, and naval industry recent decades. For this reason, it is significant to investigation of the damage resistance of composites under the explosion loads. The objective of this paper, to examine explosive load effects on layered hybrid and other combinations of Carbon Epoxy and Glass Epoxy. There are numerous parameters that affect the strength of composite materials, including material characteristics, material thickness, and stacking configurations. In this thesis, blast analyses were conducted with Carbon/Epoxy and Glass/Epoxy to test whether a composite material meets strength requirements. In the analyses, plates consisting of six, eight, and twelve layers and sequence configurations with a thickness of 0.25 mm were created. Analyses were performed using ANSYS by defining TNT of different sizes. The strength values of Carbon/Epoxy and Glass/Epoxy and, the rates of rupture in the plates were compared and other mechanical properties were investigated. An increase in the number of layers in the plate resulted in a noticeable improvement in its strength, which, in turn, led to a significant decrease in the extent of damage sustained. Analyses performed on hybrid composite plates, incorporating sequential use of two distinct materials (Carbon/Epoxy and Glass/Epoxy) to establish a more homogeneous structure, revealed increased strength in comparison to configurations with lower homogeneity. As a result, these more homogeneous sequences exhibited reduced deformation values.

Modelling and control of vertical landing rockets

This thesis focuses on a research initiative initiated by SpaceX and Blue Origin, aiming to develop cost-effective rocket technology through vertical landing experiments. The study aims to design a controller to simulate the flight and vertical landing of a rocket, thereby creating a dynamic model for the rocket. In the process of deriving the dynamic model of the rocket's motion equations, various control systems such as gimballed engines, cold gas thrusters, grid fins, and traditional fins will be mathematically modeled using Simulink, a MATLAB-based graphical modeling environment. At the core of the study are comprehensive comparisons of PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controllers, LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulator) controllers, MPC (Model Predictive Control) controllers, and RL (Reinforcement Learning) algorithms in the context of rocket control. The study delves into the simplicity of the PID controller, the optimization principles in LQR design, and the complexity of the MPC controller, focusing on their effectiveness and limitations in successfully controlling the rocket. This thesis stands out as a critical step toward the development of cost-effective rocket technology. The obtained results provide a crucial foundation for future designs of rocket control systems, holding the potential to shape advancements in this field.

Coordinated and autonomous movement of unmanned ground and aerial vehicles at indoor and outdoor environments

In this study, we present autonomous exploration in unmapped environments and aim to achieve complete topological coverage without relying on prior maps. Many existing approaches assume pre-built environmental models or target sensor coverage rather than topology, so they fall short of this goal. We propose two Generalized Voronoi Diagram (GVD)–based strategies that achieve coverage by systematically visiting Voronoi vertices and traversing edges. The first uses a range-sensing ground robot and maintains equidistance from nearby obstacles to navigate precisely. The second forms a cooperative UAV–UGV team: a camera-equipped aerial vehicle guides the ground platform and enables predictive decisions. We implement both strategies in a unified co-simulation pipeline that integrates MATLAB/Simulink with Gazebo and includes realistic vehicle dynamics and sensor models. We evaluated the methods in four environments with topological complexity increases from 8 to 39 Voronoi vertices. The results revealed a clear trade-off between spatial accuracy and operational efficiency. The range-sensor method spatial achieved 3-6 times higher precision through geometric vertex computation. By contrast, the aerial-camera method completed missions two to three times faster and improved path efficiency by 17–21% through predictive navigation.

Manufacturing and experimenting a vertical axis wind turbine with movable blades

Nowadays, sustainable with friendly produced energy is the most required by the governments from research centers. Is using wind energy by varieties of different types of turbines. It is prove as the cleanest, most reliable, supports growth and sustainability, and has no heat-trapping effect. Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) is the kind that dominates the large scale ones due to its relatively high efficiency comparing with the other type namely, Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). However, the HAWT disadvantage is that the horizontal axis, which is subjected to a high bending load, causes relatively higher maintenance costs. Additionally, VAWT is more appropriate for installation in small-scale and in urban areas due to its capability to run under turbulent wind stream conditions. From the other side, the disadvantage of the VAWT is that it is less efficient due to the negative role for some blades running in the opposite wind-direction. However, in this work, an attempt has been made to overcome that drawback by varying the Angle of Attack (AOA) of the vertically positioned blades. To achieve the AOA variation, a mechanism has been added, so it should allow the blade to rotate about its own axis under the effect of the aerodynamics force, without any need for external power based on its rotational position relative to the free stream. An aerodynamic analysis has been done theoretically by FEM methods. İn order to validate the applicability and performance improvement, a model from the composite material has been manufactured in the in-house workshop, afterward it has been tested under a different range of wind speed and various style of turbulent wind, for comparing the results and study the effect of AOA variation.

Design of adjustable airfoil to delay stall

In this study an alternative method is developed to reduce flow separation. Control of flow separation and transition point by means of different mechanisms such as using leading edge devices, blowing, and suction have been quite extensively researched in the literature. In this study, a new concept is investigated: Airfoil shape can be changed dynamically at different conditions (such as speed, angle of attack) also unusual airfoil design constraints can sometimes arise leading to some unconventional shapes and as a result of these desings different airfoil models can be used when the aircraft is climbing or descending. This property contribute high efficiency at any angle of attack or speed. To prove this efficiency the existing wing models (NACA 4412 and NACA 63-215) were changed to make comparisons at different angles of attack. In this study, the aerodynamic characteristics of the new wing profiles obtained by changing the x / c ratio of the two wing types (NACA 4412 and NACA 63-215) were investigated. It has been observed that the stall condition can be delayed between about 2 and 4 degrees due to the increase in maximum lift force in the wings at the end of the operation.

A training sailplane design

In this study, the first general three phases of sailplane design, which are requirement defining, conceptual design and preliminary design have been studied and applied for a two-seater electric-powered self-sustaining training sailplane design. The critical performance specifications of two-seater sailplanes existing in the literature have been described and taken into consideration as a starting point. In requirement defining phase, critical objective parameters were tried to be realistically estimated depending on this collected data. General layout of the sailplane was determined at the conceptual design phase depending on advantages and disadvantages of wing, tail and fuselage configurations. In preliminary design phase, with the objective of designing aerodynamically efficient wing, tail and fuselage combination, each of the geometries were optimized to satisfy stability and especially level flight trim conditions by means of numerical analyzes. Trial-error optimization of the wing and tail designs were carried out especially depending on the criteria of having high lift to drag ratio and low induced drag. For this purpose, main wing was tried to be designed to have span-wise lift distribution similar to the elliptical lift distribution. Center of gravity calculations were carried out, its location was optimized and limitations were determined. In the end of the study, the aerodynamic performance parameters of the concluded design were obtained and revealed with numerical analyses. The obtained results were found to be in good agreement with the previous studies.

Investigating the flow seperation due to grooves over a cylindrical shape

Cylindrical objects are widely used in many engineering applications, especially in aerospace and aircraft engineering. In the present study, in an attempt to reduce the aerodynamic drag of a flow over a cylindrical shape, three cases of groove size were analyzed. For every case, the angular position of the groove was changed four times. The grooves were square-shaped and taken 5%, 10% and %15 of the cylinder diameters; while the angular positions were taken 30°, 45°, 60° and 75° relative to the forward stagnation point. The analysis was made numerically using finite volume method based on commercial code Ansys-Fluent. Bare (without grooves) circular cylinder was analyzed for the sake of validation at Re:10000. In order to perform a quantitative analysis, the drag coefficient, the RMS of lift coefficient and the Strouhal number were computed. Reynolds number was kept at 10000. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method was applied for turbulence modelling. In the conclusion, it was found that two square grooves reduce the drag coefficient over cylinder.

Determination of thermal fatigue characteristics of thin plates

With the development of technology, engineers try to design more safe, light and less costly structures to meet people's needs. Engineers also need to consider the difficult working conditions of the design of structures in industries such as aviation. The materials used in the aviation industry are subjected to continuous and cyclic temperature changes due to their operating conditions. The thermal loads occur between the subzero and temperatures above the zero degrees. In this thesis, it is aimed to search the thermal fatigue characteristics of materials under various boundary conditions and load cases. This investigation was performed numerically using an improved algorithm. The algorithm has the opportunity to examine the behavior of materials subjected to cyclic thermal loads. Many parts of the aircraft including outer surface are exposed these cyclic thermal loads. So, consideration of effects of thermal fatigue during the design of structures used in these parts is necessary. 7075 T6, 6061 T6, 2024 T4, and 2014 T6 aluminum alloys are used in this thesis. Thermal fatigue resistance of these materials is compared using the safety factor distribution of plates under the thermal fatigue and thermal fatigue with cyclic mechanic loads. Also effects of different cutouts (to see the effects of nonlinearities) and location of these cutouts on the plate are investigated. The results of different cases are compared to each other.

Mechanical properties of the repaired composite materials

Composite materials are widely used in the aviation industry due to their excellent mechanical and thermal properties. During manufacturing and in-service stage some defects may occur on the composite structures. Especially, external impacts can cause combined damages to the structures. Since composite structures are more sensitive to those damages, it has led to the search for reliable composite repair methods. Generally, due to economic reasons, repairing is preferred provided that design requirements, instead of to change with a new one.Beside the current repair techniques, new techniques have been in the investigation stage. The main currently used techniques include adhesive external patch bonding and scarf-stepped type repairs. Scarf-stepped repair method is the most preferred for their stiffness and longevity features. In this thesis, the stiffness and tensile strength of different scarf-stepped repair design types were investigated experimentally considering various step sizes. Produced Glass/Epoxy test specimens were damaged performing Quasi-static indentation (QSI) and tensile tests. Damaged and original plates were compared for damage resistance considering directly damage results before and after repair processes. The results indicated that stiffness of the repaired specimens was significantly affected by step sizes.

Innovative design of coaxial helicopter

ABSTRACT INNOVATIVE DESIGN OF COAXIAL HELICOPTER ŞAVKIN, Burak M.Sc. in Aircraft and Aerospace Engineering Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Hanifi DOĞRU December 2019 57 pages The aim of this study is to design a coaxial helicopter without tail by introducing a new perspective to coaxial helicopter design. The tail rotor system has caused continuous problems in rotary wing aircraft. For this reason, the studies related to the coaxial helicopters in the literature have been examined and the details of these have been presented in the study. In accordance with the objective of the study, flow analyzes were performed to obtain the thrust forces of single propeller and multiple propeller systems. In the analysis, surface parameters which are one of the objective parameters were used to obtain the thrust force. The analyzes were carried out based on the variable number of rotations of the propellers. In this way, it was determined how much thrust the propeller can obtain at the given rpm. In addition, the results of the analyzes were validated by theoretical calculations. When the error rates are examined, it is seen that the results obtained from both theory and analysis are significant. When the results obtained from the coaxial multi-propeller system were examined, it was found that more thrust can be obtained than the single-propeller system. After the analyzes were verified with calculations, tailless coaxial helicopter design was made. With the realized design, a more secure system was designed. Key Words: Coaxial Helicopters, Design, Flow Analysis.

Electrical erosion micro hole drilling of aerospace materials

High production standards are required in the aviation industry. One of these requirements is the dimentional accurancy and surface quality of the manufactured parts. Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is one of the precise production method in the non-traditional manufacturing methods. Micro hole-EDM is widely preferred for drilling high aspect ratio holes. In this study, Micro hole-EDM process was investigated and its effects on the aerospace materials were examined. These materials were selected as Nickel alloy Inconel 718 and Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The EDM parameters were selected as; discharge current (I), pulse on time (Ton) and pulse off time (Toff). The Output parameters were selected as; material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness value (Ra) and electrode wear rate (EWR). Design of Experiment (DOE) was created by the Taguchi method. The results were transformed into a mathematical model with regression analysis, and the relationship between input parameters and response parameters was interpreted through this model. Reliability of the model was analyzed by analysis of variance. With regression analysis optimization, it is aimed to reach the optimum values of MRR, EWR and Ra. Designing and modelling of single motor multicopter control system

Multi-copter technology, which today dominates an area almost large enough to surround us and has popularity, has been developed and modified by following each other technologically from past to present. Compared to other aircraft suspended in the air, it has been very preferred due to its mechanical simplicity and multi-functional flight configuration. However, this simplicity restricts maneuverability and efficiency. For this reason, in this thesis, Heli-Quad, a single-engine and variable pitch quadcopter, which is a new design with high maneuverability and advanced electronic technology simplicity, has been developed. Unlike conventional quadcopters, a single motor connected to the quadcopter frame and torque tube gear mechanism is used to rotate the propellers. Propellers are moved in a negative and positive position thanks to the collective mechanism connected to the torque tube. In this study, contrary to similar studies using a belt drive system, the shaft drive system was used and the electronic design and modeling of the control system of Heli-Quad, which is generally a single-engine quadcopter were studied as the main motivation. By taking advantage of scanned literature and books, was studied and researched from the basis of the PID control system to the main operating principles of flight controllers. A small-scale controls experiment was carried out with the basic logic of PID control. In this study, were used PIXHAWK flight controller and MISSION Planner interface system. The electronic temple was configurated and the system is programmed through the mission planner interface. Key Words: Heli-Quad, PIXHAWK, MISSION Planner, PID, Collective Mechanism

Designing and construction of single motor multicopter

In this thesis, an innovative design was presented with the aim of reduced power consumption and increased maneuver capability for the multicopters, which have a rapidly growing utilization among other UAV applications with their mechanical simplicity and various areas of usage. Propeller rotor sets were designed in such a manner that the driving of these sets can be achieved with a single brushless DC motor for a decreased power consumption, and a variable-pitch changing mechanism was used for an improved maneuver envelope along with the directional changes. A drive mechanism in capable of preserving the mechanical simplicity of the conventional multicopters was designed and strength analysis were applied for the multicopter which was aimed to be constructed in quadrotor configuration. Aerodynamic properties of the selected propeller with thin circular arc airfoil were calculated via a CFD solver with the similar Goe417a profile and expected thrust and power values were obtained with the aid of Blade Element and Momentum Theory. Finally, a variable pitch single motor quadrotor was developed.

Design and analysis of concept unmanned aerial vehicle

This study includes the design, performance analysis, and aerodynamic improvement of a mid-range tactical UAV inspired by flying fish (Exocoetidae). By designing a dihedral wing and a curved wingtip, the static stability of the UAV was increased and vortex concentrations that cause friction were avoided. An aerodynamic body has been designed by using the narrow and long torpedo shape of flying fish. With this design approach, the reference area across the flow has been lowered and wind resistance during flight has been reduced. In this way, maximum efficiency has been achieved in performance, speed, and balance harmony. Basic requirements defined for the UAV are flight altitude over 5000 m, 12 hours endurance in the air, 100 kg payload capacity, and 150 km communication range. Computational fluid dynamics was used to construct flow models at different flow rates and angles of the aircraft and to evaluate aerodynamic coefficients. A normal aerodynamic optimization process involves the relationship between many variables. However, the aerodynamic improvement process performed in this study focused on obtaining maximum static balance at the correct wing angle. The airfoil selected for the specified purpose was kept fixed and the angle of the UAV wing with the horizontal plane was changed and compared. As a result, an unmanned aerial vehicle was designed according to the results obtained from the development process.

There has been a growing interest in the development of the smart material systems technology due to their incorporation in various structures ranging from aeronautical/aerospace, automotive, helicopter and turbo-machinery rotor blades, robot manipulators. Using adaptive materials, the dynamical characteristics of the structure could be controlled in a predictable manner to avoid the dynamical instabilities such as structural resonances. In this thesis, dynamic behaviour of aircraft wings is investigated and control of natural frequencies is achieved using piezoelectric actuation. Two different models namely, Timoshenko beam and thin-walled composite beam are used in this study. Natural frequencies of both model are obtained and using active control their variations are examined. First, thin walled composite beam theory is introduced with detailed formulation including the effects of primary and secondary warping. This beam model also incorporates a number of non-classical effects such as material anisotropy, transverse shear deformation and warping restraint. Moreover, the directionality property of thin-walled composite beams produces a wide range of elastic couplings. In this respect, constitutive equations and energy expressions are given. Equations of motion are derived using Hamilton principle. Second, in order to determine natural frequencies without piezoelectric influence, free vibration problem is formulated for an anti-symmetric lay-up configuration, also referred as Circumferentially Uniform Stiffness (CUS). Due to the anti-symmetry in lay-ups this configuration generates the coupled motion of transverse-lateral bending-shear. The equations of motion are discretized using Extended Glaerkin Method (EGM) to determine the natural frequencies of the system. The effect of transverse shear on the natural frequencies is also investigated by simply including and excluding transverse shear in the free vibration analyses, which has found to be significant for higher modes. For validation purposes, analyses are conducted for a box beam thin walled composite beam and results are compared with the literature. Then, the analyses are repeated for a diamond shaped cross-section section and the results of different cross-sections are compared and discussed. Active vibration control is introduced to gain an ability to control dynamic characteristics of structures. Implementation of piezoelectrically induced moments regarding the boundary moment is explained and two different control laws, namely proportional and velocity feedback control laws and their effects are investigated. The equations of motion that includes the effect of piezoelectric layers are cast into the state-space representation to obtain the dynamic response of the beam. Before analyzing thin-walled composite beams, a numerical example is solved to attain a deeper understanding about the effect of piezoelectric materials on the natural frequencies. This beam model is developed using the first order shear deformable theory (Timoshenko beam theory) and then solved to determine the natural frequencies with and without piezoelectric layers influence for various boundary conditions and lay-ups. Next, the similar analyses are also carried for thin walled composite beams highlighting the effects of piezoelectric layers, material anisotropy and transverse shear on the natural frequencies for varying feedback gains. Besides, several control laws such as proportional feedback gain and velocity feedback gain are used for vibration control and their results are compared. In addition, optimal control law is implemented and dynamic response of the structure is investigated using different control laws. In conclusion, for a diamond shaped thin-walled composite aircraft wing, active vibration control is achieved using adaptive materials. Piezoelectric materials are used as sensors and actuators to provide closed-loop feedback control system. In future studies, response of the structure to the external forces will be investigated and controlled by using adaptive materials.

Gezici mikro ay robotunun hareketlilik, manipülasyon ve görüntü işleme sistemleri tasarımı

The research area for the lunar micro-rovers (LMR) is very extensive such as navigation, obstacle avoidance, path planning, rover platform design, field-testing, motion kinematics, slip models, and so on. Since there was no rover platform to work on within our faculty, the project started with designing a micro-rover platform to implement and test certain technologies not only during this project but during future projects as well. Therefore, the thesis presents a simple and versatile rover platform. According to the future missions, the geology of the Moon, potential resources and the distribution of them are gaining attention internationally since the Moon itself is an important planetary body for exploration by both human and robotic missions. For this reason, lunar micro-rovers must be designed to make scientific research, which can support these missions by investigating the lunar environment and mission parameters. Multiple scientific areas such as planetary sciences and geology, plasma physics, astrobiology, astronomy, space science will be benefiting from the scientific outcomes of the future lunar missions. Therefore, performing scientific researches with an LMR and addressing multiple scientific goals are essential objectives. Landing on the lunar surface can be expressed as another challenge; however, it is not one of the topics of this project. Many studies suggest orbital missions need to be coupled with surface investigations in order to validate the interpretation of data sets. In addition, surface data will show suitability for manned missions as well as validity of the models on the significant surface characteristics. The mission is proposed to land on a determined area in South Polar region of the Moon since longer periods of solar illumination is available by reason of the low sun inclination is coupled with topographic highs. The main objective is to obtain a surface sample from the Moon and store it within the micro-rover to study in mini-laboratory, which is expected to be on the top of the LMR. The sample is desired to have a volume between 1-3 cm3; therefore, the robotic arm tool is designed based on a handling mechanism with a surface geometry, which enables to tip tool grab a solid rock sample from the ground; however, this tool can also be replaced with a drill mechanism for subsurface sampling. The main interest of the research is chosen as investigating the ejecta areas on the lunar surface containing both meteor samples as well as Moon's own material. The rover must be able to move to points of interest to make measurements with its onboard instruments and transmit data. An LMR must be lightweight with high mobility, resistant to high radiation, extreme temperature variations, lunar dust etc. In design process, the most important considerations were mobility and weight limitations. The mass and inertia properties are derived from Solidworks after material selection. Most of the time in an LMR, power is generated using the solar panels and stored in the batteries while onboard computer would be performing multiple task and the reset capability in emergencies. All subsystems of LMR have to be protected from high radiation, vacuum and extreme temperature variance. First, a small lightweight rover provides significant savings in the launch and lunar landing thruster capabilities; therefore, size and weight have to be limited. For this reason, there is not enough room for complex ideas, so everything must be as simple as possible. In addition, the energy limitations require actuators to be chosen those consume very little power since there will be limited electrical power from solar panels. Lunar surface temperature varies from -240oC at night to 121oC during the day, and micro-rover will be operating in micro gravity environment. Onboard computer and battery is expected to keep the electronics warm in order to operate in that low temperature. The body structure is designed to have low volume; however, it must provide sufficient space for the onboard computer, scientific instruments, actuators, cameras, sensors etc. The uneven lunar surface requires LMR to sense the obstacles as well as other hazards in order to get closer to the crater region, and it must be able to identify interesting sample candidates during the motion. Therefore, the primary technologies to be implemented within the LMR are chosen as local mapping, manipulation and sample handling, and path planning. The surface sampling activities will be commanded from Earth during the communication windows while the instruments within the mini laboratory analyze samples, and data of the environmental properties such as radiation, ionization, temperature will be gathered as well. The formal mission lifetime is expected to be couple of months if the LMR survives the lunar night that is approximately 13 days. The first phase of the mission will contain primary scientific activities and measurements before the lunar night period; therefore, if the LMR does not survive the lunar night, it will gather and transmit data before it malfunctions. At the beginning, the design of the lunar micro-rover is chosen as a 6-wheel system with a rocker-bogie suspension that has a mechanism as passive rotary joint to attach two links called rocker and bogie. As wheels are free to move up and down on an uneven terrain with the rotary joint, each wheel carry the weight of the LMR equally, but it is much heavier than a 4-wheeled suspension, and each extra actuator means more energy consumption and higher hardware requirements. By only giving input for the links' motions, the joints' torques are derived for the given system, and for the poses, which robotic manipulators cannot reach, the singularity of the Jacobian matrix is observed. The computational complexity of each iteration remained constant, and it grows in a linear fashion with the number of joints increases. In addition, a closed-form dynamic model is obtained which is the same as the one obtained by using DH parameters. The inertia tensor matrix shows all mass and inertial properties of the robotic system, and it is very important to be derived for understanding the dynamics of the system since the inertia of the manipulator has to be surpassed in order to move the links. Therefore, the effect of Moon and Earth's gravity ratio is observed in the torques. Since the robotic arms' motion is determined to be slow, Coriolis Effect is not strong. Moreover, the profiles of the both torque graphs seem to be very similar; however, the magnitude of the torque's ratio is very close to the ratio of the gravity, which is approximately 1/6. Active laser triangulation system operates by sensing the reflected red laser light from a surface; however, the ambient light variations and the reflectance properties of different surfaces are the main challenges of this system. The ambient light variations can be overcome by using optical filters according to the wavelength of the laser emitter to be used in outdoor environments more accurately. In addition, active laser triangulation system is desired to be low-cost, low power consuming while having high response speed and high sampling frequency, and it will be used for detecting hazards and mapping the rough terrain. In addition, a passive triangulation system such as stereo-based planner is a reliable choice, and it will be added to the LMR in the future; however, it cannot detect craters and shadow areas. When the LMR uses its active laser triangulation system and captures a new image, the LMR's field of view is updated in the image space. The information of outside of the LMR's field of view is kept in memory, and the map data are implemented in the algorithm as 2D grid that shows the coordinates of the nodes and the height values corresponding to those nodes. Then, the updated image space is used to renew 3D main map. The LMR's field of view will be updated on the main map, and the rest information will be preserved in the memory unchanged. If the captured image is used to create a local map, and then it is used to update the current map, the new nodes cannot match the main map's nodes exactly. Therefore, the image space must be updated first in mm metric, and then the main 3D map must be updated. Finally, greedy search algorithm and A* search algorithm are implemented in the main algorithm to compare their path planning performance. Different tasks are given to the path planning algorithms, and if there are no obstacles or hollows, which the robot cannot overcome, both algorithms found the reasonable path. On the other hand, the complication level is increased for the tasks, and A* search algorithm found the optimal path each time, if it exists at all. Therefore, A* search is chosen as the path planning algorithm instead of greedy search. The next step for this project is to build prototype for verification of the performance and to have a micro-rover platform to work on within our faculty.

Karbon nanotüpler kullanılarak kompozitlerin mekanik özelliğinin geliştirilmesi: Nano-dikişli lamine kompozitlerin lamineler arası kayma mukavemetinin incelenmesi

Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (A-CNTs) that are added into carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite can significantly improve not only mechanical but also electrical properties of composites and called as hybrid or nano-engineered composite. Three common methods such as dispersion of CNTs into the polymer matrix, stitching them onto carbon fibers and synthesis CNTs onto fibers (fuzzy) are used to produce hybrid composites. In this study, A-CNTs which are synthesized using thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are integrated by stitching directly onto carbon fiber surface after fabrication of custom made prepreg layers with carbon fibers. The custom made prepreg layers are made of nanotube reinforced epoxy matrix and carbon fibers. At the same time in this project, instead of performing higher number of experiments, experimental design which is called Taguchi L8 orthogonal array is preferred and also only 8 experiments (each experiment is repeated at least 5 times) are performed according to Taguchi design. At this design 7 different parameters which has 2 levels of each one are examined. Manufacturing method, epoxy type, dispersion solvent type, dispersed amount of CNT in epoxy and stitch types are selected as parameters. A-CNTs are synthesized on a Si substrate using CVD of C2H4/H2 at atmospheric pressure. The length of A-CNTs which is used to fabricate hybrid composites are around 80 μm with Raman measurements of (G/D ratio) about 2. During the hybrid composite fabrication A-CNTs are removed from the substrate without any damage with an easy delamination growth protocol and fully transferred onto the middle bidirectional carbon fiber ply. Three most important steps of the study can be summarized as the transfer printing of CNTs from substrate to reinforcement ply without disturbing orientation, homogeneous distribution of A-CNTs into epoxy and application of the mixture into the system. In our earlier studies, unmodified A-CNTs are dispersed using homogenizer and tip types ultrasonication in epoxy and alcohol (IPA, acetone etc.) respectively. After removed alcohol (if necessary) all dispersed CNTs are mixed using mechanical mixer in a low viscosity thermosetting resins which are consisted two components and a high viscose thermosetting resin (has a component). But some agglomerations are seen in these methods, so in this project magnetic stirrer is used for dispersion and achieved CNTs which is also called as bucky paper and this paper can be easily disperse to individual CNTs. This approach generally has the advantages of simplicity and high amount of CNTs can be dispersed on the contrary tip sonicator. A uniform distribution of CNTs during wetting is critical for composite properties. Samples are produced using hand lay-up/vacuum, and vacuum infusion process (VIP). Hand lay-up/vacuum and vacuum assisted resin infusion molding are a very attractive, cost effective and environmentally friendly method of processing composites. Experiments are performed to compare fracture behavior of the hierarchical composite with and without A-CNT. For the mechanical properties interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the samples are measured by short beam shear (SBS) test. In earlier reports it is stated that carbon nanotube reinforced composites have showed an improvement of 8-30% interlaminar shear strength by short beam tests. The addition of A-CNTs onto the carbon nanotube reinforced matrix and fiber composite is expected to show higher interlaminar shear strength properties. On the other hand before the experiments, the electrical conductivity of all samples are measured, to assess the potential as sensors for strain sensing for structural health monitoring (SHM). The stitch A-CNTs effects is investigated on the mechanical and electrical properties of composite as well as dispersed CNTs in epoxy. In the other section of thesis, vertically aligned multi walled carbon nanotubes (A-MWNTs) are synthesized with CVD method to create small dimension pore sized ultra narrow nano-exchangers for nano-particle and gas transfer through channels. As-grown A-MWNTs would have <2% volume fraction after the growth procedure and the rest is air (~98%). These structures would have high porosity and high permeability due to their structures with the CNT-CNT spacing between 80-100 nm depending on the catalyst and precursor system coupling. A micro device are fabricated with this A-MWNT and the nano-particle and gas exchange transfer will be studied with this context. The growth of A-MWNTs will be either in a continuous fashion as arrays or templated pillars that will help to characterize the effects of morphology on the efficiency of micro device.

Jet akışında lüle çıkış geometrisinin etkisi

Nozzles have a widespread usage in the industrial and daily life. For example, combustion chambers, air conditioning systems, jet engine exhausts are nozzles from which high speed jet flow issues. There are problems with the jet flow as well, such as noise which is a source of noise pollution and mixing problems which results in performance reduction. Solution to these problems is disguised in the flow phenomena. That is why understanding the jet flow and parameters affecting it is an important subject. Through this study, effect of the exit geometry of a nozzle on the flow issuing from it was investigated. Firstly nozzles were designed in the light of past work. Different geometrical aspects were tried to be included in the work. CAD drawings were generated. CFD analyses were conducted on the predetermined nozzle geometries after generating a mesh structure on the measurement volume. Secondly, flow parameters were experimentally measured with the help of an LDA system. LDA system settings were adjusted to have an optimum data rate. Necessary post-processing was conducted and results were compared with the CFD data to validate the CFD methodology. A valid CFD methodology was constructed to be used in further research.

Ağır ticari araçlarda debriyaj yokuş kalkış testinin simülasyonu

Clutch hill start test is one of the most critical and specific vehicle tests for validating the clutch system. It helps us to understand the thermal capability of the clutch during repetitive vehicle operation. During the vehicle launch, the kinetic energy in the clutch is converted to heat with respect to the first law of thermodynamics. The heat dissipation takes place by conduction between the clutch's frictional components, while it takes place by convection to the environment. The components of the clutch are heated due to this process. The clutch must be capable of dissipating the heat throughout the assembly in order to cool itself down. If the clutch is exposed to extreme heat, it may potentially cease to function due to thermal destruction. The amount of dissipated heat energy in the clutch depends highly on several vehicle properties such as the transmission gear ratio, final drive ratio (FDR), tire size and vehicle mass. It also depends on the driver's operating behavior, namely, the duration of the gas and clutch pedal inflection. In this thesis, the simulation of clutch hill start test has been established. This type of simulation has not been available within the Ford Motor Company. It has been built on GT-SUITE commercial software. Not only has the entire driveline been created, but also a model for the driver. Furthermore, a thermal section has been created and optimized for heavy commercial vehicles.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) recently is an essential subject for people because of the amount of personal time, which is spent in indoor environment such as houses, offices, shopping malls and vehicles increases day by day. Therefore, IAQ affects human health, their efficiency and comfort. Bacterias, viruses, dusts are some of the contaminants in the indoor environment. These pollutants usually include carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other particulates. Volatile organic compounds are major effective chemical contaminants that people breathe in indoor environment. For aircrafts, indoor air quality is called as Cabin Air Quality (CAQ) which is one of the most important parameters that affect passenger comfort in aircraft, especially on long duration and transatlantic flights. Because of the dynamic structure of aircrafts, cabin altitude, flight duration, temperature, pressure, cabin humidity and dehydration changes according to environmental conditions which affects the CAQ. Dusts, bacterias and viruses can be removed until a limited size from aircraft cabins by High Efficiency Particulate Filters (HEPAs) but gas filtration is a big challenge comparing to particulate filtration. VOCs are generally in gas phase because of their chemical properties. VOCs are familiar indoor contaminants, which are emitted from different sources such as in-flight meal and drink services, combustion by-products, consumer products, construction materials of people in the cabin etc. The accumulation of excessive amounts of VOCs causes health problems for passengers such as headache, fatigue, tiredness, nausea, and illness. For this reason, the filtration of these VOCs in cabin is needed. There are several traditional pollution removal method in aircraft cabins. However, these contaminants are converted from the gaseous phase to the solid phase by these removal methods. This requires manually frequent cleaning or periodical exchange of the filter. Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) is a novel and promising method for the improvement of cabin air quality since the contaminants can be removed from the cabin and oxidize the contaminants to water vapor (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) which are not harmful for human health by using a combination of semiconductor catalysts and light energy. Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), which is the catalyst that is activated by UV light, is the most commonly used compound in PCO reactors. Design, characterization, production and the efficiency tests of the filters against VOCs in photocatalytic oxidation process is the main topic of this study. Electrospinning method used for production of the filters with different polymeric materials. Titania was deposited onto the nanofibers(NFs) mat as catalyst by electrospraying which is a similar method of electrospinning. For activation of these filters UV light is required and for providing that UV-Lamps and UV LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) were used as a novel technology. By varying the UV light intensity on the filters, efficiency analyzes were made. The reason of choosing UV LED instead of UV-Lamp is the advantages of LEDs. In conclusion, cabin air quality is poor on newer model aircrafts because of the incorporation of recirculation systems and lower outside airflow. Therefore, CAQ is an important issue for aircraft manufacturers and airline companies in these days. High efficiency particulate air type filters (HEPA-types) are already included in recent aircrafts in order to remove particulates and biological particles from the recirculated air in the cabin. However, VOCs are still can not be removed from the cabin air by current filters. Consequently, PCO reactors must be developed and mounted in aircrafts for removing VOCs and increasing the CAQ in aircrafts. In this study, the photocatalytic capable NF based filters was designed, fabricated, tested and optimized to maintain a highly efficient cabin air filtration system using the PCO process.

Grafik işleme birimi üzerinde yüksek mertebe kompakt şema kullanılarak gömülü sınır uygulaması

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has become a major tool for simulating the fluid flow in various areas. It is a cost and time effective way compared to experimental methods. Even though it is not always possible to obtain realistic solutions concerning complex high Reynolds number flows due to the hardware problems, numerous researches have been dedicated to find ways to overcome this shortness. Numerical methods that are used to perform CFD analyses define the accuracy and duration of simulations. For instance, in order to get accurate results with low order numerical methods, very high grid resolution is required and high grid resolution yields to long computation periods with high memory usage. To overcome this drawback higher order schemes are used commonly to get reliable solutions with coarser grids. Spectral methods are more reliably than standart finite difference methods but the computational cost of these schemes are very high. Compact higher order finite difference schemes have spectral like resolution ability but simpler structure. Compared to the standart finite difference schemes, compact schemes use smaller stencil and give better resolution with the same order of accuracy. In this study a sixth order compact scheme is used to obtain results of several incompressible flow test cases; flow over a flat plate, lid driven cavity flow and flow around a circular cylinder. Mesh generation is another time consuming part of CFD simulations. As an alternative to the body-fitted meshes, immersed boundary method (IBM) which is a very efficient and straightforward way to generate grid has been used widely. With IBM one does not need to generate mesh that conforms the body, but change the algorithm of the solution to impose the boundaries. In this method a simple mesh such as cartesian mesh is generated without the body and then in the solution step the presence of the body is introduced by the modifications of the governing equations. Compared to body-fitted structured or unstructured grids, in IBM less memory is required and grid generation is very easy. An IB method is applied in the test cases of this thesis study to represent solid boundaries. Another achievement of this study is that it uses a graphics processing unit (GPU) as a computational platform. General purpose computing on GPUs has recently become a very efficient way compared to central processing unit (CPU) in computational sciences. The computations of the present study are performed on one of NVIDIA's scientific computing GPUs Tesla C1060 which has 30 streaming multi-processors, each containing 8 scalar processors clocked at 1.3 GHz with a bandwith of 102 GB/s to 4 GB GDDR3 global memory. NVIDIA‟s Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) toolkit which is a complete software development solution for programming CUDA-enabled GPUs is utilized as the code design medium. In conclusion, three test cases, flow over a flat plate, lid driven cavity flow and flow around a circular cylinder, are solved using immersed boundary method and sixth order compact finite difference scheme on a GPU. Results obtained from flow over a flat plate test case are compared to Blasius boundary layer theorem solutions. Lid driven cavity flow and flow around a circular cylinder results are compared to the ones found on literature. All results obtained in this study are in very good agreement with theoritical and reference results.

This thesis, namely, AUTOFLY-Aid Project, aims to develop and demonstrate novel flight deck automation support algorithms and tools for potential conflict avoidance and performance-optimal flight using "dynamic 4D trajectory management". The developed automation support system is envisioned not only to improve the primary shortcomings of existing on-board traffic collision avoidance systems (e.g. TCAS), but also to develop new conceptual add-on avionics and procedures enabling intent data exchange, decision support systems with augmented reality and flight control hand-over implementation in dynamically evolving scenarios. The main concepts which has been developed in AUTOFLY-Aid project are a) design and development of the mathematical models of the full composite airspace picture from the flight deck perspective, as seen/measured/informed by the aircraft flying in the sky of the SESAR and NextGen 2020+ vision and beyond, b) design and development of a dynamic 4D trajectory planning algorithm can generate at real-time flyable (i.e. dynamically and performance-wise feasible) alternative trajectories for both short-term and mid-term scale across the evolving stochastic composite airspace picture and c) development and testing of the automation support system on a Boeing 737-800 Flight Simulator with conceptual procedures, automated flight control implementations, and reality augmented based decision support demonstrations providing the flight crew with quantified and visual understanding of evolving situation. Evaluation from a purely centralized tactical intervention model towards a more strategic planning and progressive introduction of more autonomous and decentralized tactical operation with more proactive systems are key concepts in both NextGen and SESAR future ATM paradigm shift vision. Implementing of these new-generation ATM concepts will significantly change the human role in the ATM system by considering "best decision place", "best decision time" and "the best decision player". Through these objectives, AUTOFLY-Aid envisions to take some of the work off the controller by delegating some responsibility to flight decks in an efficient manner. The developed automation system offers persistent in-flight hazard and flight efficiency monitoring and tactical flight trajectory planning as a function of look-ahead time and dynamically changing environmental/operational conditions (and with uncertainty reduction in a feedback loop) obtained via both in-flight sense and ground-air data link. The automation system switches autonomy level according to the required response time in order to find "the best decision player" through asking "where are men better at, where are machines better at". In mid-term safety assurance mode, it is expected that pilot uses a visual decision support tools (e.g. tunnel-in-the-sky visualization) with fully situational awareness for safe and performance optimal flight. These visual advisories are generated by fusing all tactical level information feed from both on-board sensing and ground-air data/information exchange. If the reaction time permits, the system allows pilots to freely switch between the generated alternative plans, modify the solution or request re-planning. In any case of the immediate potential threat is detected (i.e. immediate response is required or late response is detected), the autonomous system may take over the flight control to solve safety-critical situation happening "almost surely" (e.g. midair collision, terrain collision etc.). This hybrid approach allows dynamic role assignment by switching between defined autonomy level modes in terms of the "required response time".

Viskoelastik akış soğutmalı mikro kıvrımlı kanallarda akış ve ısı transferi

In recent years, the microelectronic industry has shown significant improvement in terms of manufacturability, integration, functionality and enhanced performance. It has been known that microelectronic devices are strongly affected by temperature as well as thermal environment. This leads to an increasing demand for highly efficient cooling technologies. Thermal management often imposes the main obstacle for scaling down the size of modern electronic devices. Microchannel heat exchanger is an ideal candidate for small electronic devices due to their high surface-to-volume ratio as well as their small volumes. Microchannel heat sinks constitute an innovative cooling technology for the removal of a large amount of heat from a small area. Microchannels are defined as flow passages that have hydraulic diameters in the range of 10 to 100 micrometers. Following the Tuckerman and Pease (1981) at Stanford University work on single layer parallel flow micro-channel heat sink, many other studies on microchannel heat sink have been carried out. Since then, this technology has received considerable attention in microelectronics and other major application areas. Microchannel heat sinks can be used in a wide variety of applications, including electronics cooling, air-conditioning, space application, refrigeration, heat recovery ventilation (HRV), and automotive applications, to name a few. Micro serpentine channels have been extensively used in liquid cooling due to their high heat transfer coefficients. Various enhancement methods have been proposed in order to improve the heat transfer characteristic of a microchannel. The majority of these methods share a common objective, i.e., to interrupt the boundary layer on the solid surface, and replace it with fluid from the core, thus creating a new boundary layer with an increased temperature gradient. Also, it is desirable to employ the method that gives the minimum pressure drop, and the highest heat transfer rate. In the current study, an incompressible viscoelastic fluid has been introduced as a coolant in a micro serpentine channel for heat transfer enhancement due to presence of three-dimensional purely-elastic instabilities at vanishingly small Reynolds numbers. The aim of the current study is to show that a micro serpentine channel with a viscoelastic coolant provide the higher heat transfer efficiency at vanishingly small Reynolds numbers compared to that of Newtonian flow. In order to assess the heat and mass transfer characteristics of such heat sinks, an unstructured finite volume method based on three dimensional solver has been developed. The solver utilizes a method that is based on the side-centered arrangement of flow variables with an exact mass conservation. The numerical algorithm is based on side-centered finite volume method where the velocity vector components and temperature are defined at the midpoint of each cell face while the pressure term and extra stress tensor are defined at the element centroid. The present arrangement of the primitive variables leads to a stable numerical scheme. The resulting algebraic linear systems are solved using the FGMRES(m) Krylov iterative method with the restricted additive Schwarz preconditioner with a block-incomplete factorization within each portioned sub-domain. To speed up the iterative solver per time-step, the former solutions can be used as the initial solution. The computer program used in this study was written in Fortran. The implementation of the preconditioned Krylov subspace algorithm, matrix-matrix multiplication and the multilevel preconditioner were carried out using the PETSc (Portable, Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computation) software package developed at the Argonne National Laboratories. The coolant, viscoelastic fluid is modeled as an incompressible Oldroyd-B fluid. The heat and mass transfer characteristic of the flow is studied numerically by varying a series of parameters such as Reynolds, Prandtl and Weissenberg numbers systematically. As the Weissenberg number is increased, the viscoelastic instability becomes significant. As a result of this, flow complexity and the strength of streamwise vortices increase. This shows not only hot fluid being transported away from the walls into the center but also the fluid near the wall continuously being refreshed. Based on initial evaluation of the present results, it is concluded that purely-elastic instabilities are responsible for heat transfer enhancement.

Bahsi geçen komutlar hemen her zaman ivme şeklindedir.

The main goal of this thesis is to understand the effect of rounding the edges of a cavity on sound generated by the cavity flow. To achieve this goal, the first step is to understand the physics of the flow. Then understand the aeroacoustic analogies and select the appropriate one for the specific case. Then conduct an effective CFD analysis and with the obtained data calculate the noise generated by the cavity flow using aeroacoustic analogies. A wide literature review of on cavity flow physics has been conducted and it is seen that the most important feature of the cavity flow is the self-sustained oscillations. There are 3 main types of oscillations: fluid dynamic, fluid resonant and fluid elastic oscillations. These have different characteristics and it is important to know it is possible to see several of them in the same flow. The first step to understand the noise generated by the cavity and control it is to understand these mechanism in detail. Aeroacoustics is the main focus of this thesis. Aeroacoustics can be explained briefly as the sound generated aerodynamically, which is also the name of Sir Michael James Lighthill's important paper. This topic became an important area of research nowadays, as the outcomes can cause distinguishable effects on many applications. In aircrafts sound generation can cause discomfort to passengers and humans nearby the airfields. Reducing the sound emissions from these sources is the most important way to effective noise control. To achieve this important goal aeroacoustic analogies are used. In this thesis a Modified Curle's Analogy used, as it deals with static compact bodies. To use this analogy, unsteady pressure data obtained from the walls of the cavity is required. To obtain this data, a CFD analysis by using a commercial tool should be conducted. In this tool, an unsteady analysis with the time step of $10^{-7}$ is conducted. The solver was an implicit unsteady solver with the turbulence model of RANS and realizable $k-\epsilon$ model with two layer all $y+$ wall treatment. As the solution domain, a cavity with the aspect ratio of 2 is selected. The length of the cavity is 0.3 m and the depth of it is 0.015 m. This is selected as a validation case and it is compared with a thesis that conducted a PIV analysis on a cavity with the same geometry. After the validation is confirmed, analyses with 3 different geometries are conducted. First of the geometry has a rounded leading edge with the radius of 3 mm. Second geometry has a rounded trailing edge with the same radius and the last geometry has both of its edges rounded with the same radius. Pressure data obtained from the CFD analyses and fed in to our source code that uses the Modified Curle's Equation to calculate the sound generated by the cavity. This source code give sound pressures as output and they are fed into an FFT code to get sound pressure level (SPL) values. After that OASPL datas are calculated and the first case is validated with the validation thesis. The next step is to conduct analyses with different geometries and investigate the effects of the rounded edges.

Avrupa hava trafiği ve uzay-zamansal grid salınım modellemede veri analizi ve simulasyonu uygalamaları

With its intrinsic complexity, rapidly growing demand and almost saturated infrastructures, Air Transport Management is one of the most challenging fields of the near future. To be able to respond the need, there are many conducted researches and initiatives as Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme in Europe and its US counterpart NextGen. Resilience2050.eu is one of the projects carried out in Europe with the purpose of analyzing the current air traffic system's deficiencies in terms of resilience ability. Aimed to design disruption and perturbation adaptive ATM concepts of future beyond SESAR within the boundaries of safety, this research project analyzes the current system dynamics focusing on the propagation of unexpected and undesired events through the whole ATM system which underlies the theme of this thesis. Macro analysis of the European Air Traffic Network system play a key role in pinpointing the elements and events that drive the system which are crucial for a resilient structure. Specifically the air transportation network across the airports, airspaces, subspaces and its segmentation define the structure of the flow network. In addition, scheduled flights, their densities across this network, and corresponding flight patterns define the nature of the flow across the network. The analyses provide an insight about the transportation network system's dynamics and serve to the construction of more accurate models which will enable the application of optimization problems into real world conditions. Accordingly, they form an essential part for the purpose of building a resilient structure and have an utter importance to construct reliable and robust air traffic management and control infrastructures. The analyses in this project have been conducted with two types of data as ALL_FT+ trajectory data and DDR capacity data. Each file of the trajectory data gives the all flights' trajectories with point and airspace profiles over European Air Traffic Network whereas DDR capacity data provides the declared capacities for different entities of air transportation system such as airports, airspaces etc. Among from various flight models and radar data in ALL_FT+ structure, Planned and Actual Data have been extracted with some assumptions. The planned data structure represents the prior determined trajectory that is intended to be flown whereas the actual data is the actual flown trajectory. Since the ALL_FT+ data has a complex structure with many flaws, series of fixing and filtering algorithms have been developed to preclude the wrong computations which may conclude with false deductions. The three parameters that create the infrastructure of analyses are capacity, traffic and delays. As it was mentioned, capacity values are obtained via DDR capacity data and the traffic and delays are extracted from ALL_FT+ data. The first leg of the analyses is to construct the network graph of the European Airspace where each node in the graph may represent airports. This graph does not only depict the interactions between airports, but also provide a framework to work on with traffic data. Each branch (edge) of the graph stands for reciprocal traffic flows between the related nodes. The complete connectivity graph is generated by the ALL_FT+ data itself thanks to continuous airspace profiles of each flight . The analysis is conducted bidirectional in each branches of the graph and the time interval of the whole analysis has been chosen as a month to see daily and weekly pattern and their variations based on flight plans of each day. Additionally, the findings that obtained through the traffic flow graphs regarding the magnitude of sectors also have been confirmed via monitoring the number aircrafts per hour in each sector. As a third parameter of the analyses, delays and their propagation across the network graph have been investigated. Delay is not only a solid merit of quality of service but also a key element which defines resilience in the Air Traffic Network. Individual delays for each phases that all flights experience have been calculated with seeking the differences between planned and actual data's elapsed times for each phase where the possible reasons for these differences may be unexpected events such as bad weather conditions or strikes. Aggregating these individual delays in terms of airspaces yields the delay distributions of airspaces over the European airspace network. Moreover classifying these delays in hourly intervals will depict the propagation of delays, and an example of this approach has been conducted over Frankfurt area. As a secondary approach, instead of using airspace centered analyses, network of airports have been investigated which shifts the focus to the propagation of delays between airport pairs. The approach introduces the examination of airport delays into analyses, hence the delays of Actual Off-Block Times and Taxi phases have been calculated and status of airports are monitored in terms of arrival/departure traffics and declared capacities. Incorporating the airports into the analyses provided the push-back delays and their evolutions through each flight's path which resulted with a complete track of delays. The analyses have been conducted in different perspectives and results of each are given with comments. The events, conditions and procedures that drive the air transportation network system have been identified to get deeper understanding and the comparisons of potential modelling techniques for European Air Transportation Network have been presented holistically. In addition to resilience of the European Air Traffic, emissions and air quality effects of the flights over the Marmara region have been investigated. In the last decade, air traffic has increased dramatically with a significant increase in emissions. Our goal is to quantify the impact of aircraft emissions on regional air quality, especially in regards to HC, NOx, and CO, and ozone. Here the focus is on Marmara Region, which is the busiest region in Turkey in terms of air traffic. First, aircraft HC, NOx, and CO emissions are estimated based on the Smoke Number (SN) by using the ''first order'' method. The Emissions and Dispersion Modeling System (EDMS) is used for gaseous species. HC, NOx, and CO emissions are estimated once based on the characteristic SN and a second time using the mode-specific SN. Further, aircraft emissions are processed in two ways: (1) allocating the emissions at the airport itself, and (2) by accounting for flight paths, mode, and plume rise. When the more conservative emission estimates are used (i.e, the characteristic SN estimates allocated to the region.

Termoplastik levhaların darbe davranışının nümerik olarak incelenmesi

In this thesis, dynamic response of exposure to a certain velocity impact of polycarbonate and polymethylemethacrylate plates were investigated depending on increasing thickness of plates and impacts at locations center of the plate, 20 and 40 mm were carried out by a spherical steel projectile using finite element and compare to each target plate behavior. First of all, it was investigated that impact events for polycarbonate and polymethylemethacrylate armor plates. It was conducted that explicit analyses later in this way. Analysis methods for impact problem are searched Lagrangian formulation is chosen for this study. Also, von Mises criteria is used for pc plates in this thesis. PMMA was assumed to obey the Drucker – Prager material model in the present study. Polycarbonate and PMMA materials are shown elastic- plastic behavior. Further, these polymer types are also shown viscoelastic behavior. However, it is realized that at extremely high strain rates, the strength of the material does not increase indefinitely. For these reasons, a reasonable choice was made to preserve the measured ductility while neglecting viscous effects at very high strain rates. That is, it was ignored viscoelastic behavior in this thesis. Thus, polymers like pc and PMMA are only modeled with elasic-plastic properties when it is used analysis program which Abaqus, Autodyn etc. Three different thickness of plate and three different impact locations are taken consideration in this study. Plate thickness was selected as 1.4, 1.9 and 2.4 mm. In addition, the plates were modeled using 90×90 mm. Thin square polycarbonate and PMMA plates was subjected to a spherical projectile impact at a velocity of 140 m/s. Subsequent impacts were made at plate center, 20 and 40 mm of the plate depending on changing plate thickness. The target plate outer edge was constrained for all degrees of freedom. A spherical steel projectile of 6.98 mm diameter was launched against the square plate and also the mass of projectile was calculated as 0.00139 kg. According to this information, kinetic energy of the projectile was computed as 13.693 joule. The distance between target plate and projectile doesn't have any effect on the results, because gravitational force is neglected. When setting the material properties, "Bilinear Kinematic Hardening" model is used from the Ansys Library. Since polycarbonate is a ductile material, it is selected that plastic strain failure criteria for pc. PMMA is shown brittle fracture and ductile deformation at room temperature. Therefore, two failure criteria are combined which tensile failure and ductile failure during numerical modeling. Plastic strain, von Mises stresses, maximum shear stresses, deformation of plate and energy absorption histories were recorded in this study. As increasing plate thickness, energy absorption quantity is increased as predicted for both polycarbonate and PMMA plates. At 1.9 and 2.4 mm thick, there was no fragmentation for pc plates. However, it was observed that perforated event at all plate thickness for PMMA. It is expected that this phenomenon because PMMA has less impact resistance than pc material. Also, all energy absorption values are seen to be higher for pc than PMMA material at all plate thickness. That is, kinetic energy was not completely transformed into internal energy and therefore it was occurred that perforated event during impact loading for PMMA target plate. Furthermore, maximum plastic strain values were decreased while thickness of plate was increased. This situation was expected as well because resistance of plate is increased when the plate thickness is higher. On the other hand, it is occurred that higher stress values at close to fixed edge than other impact locations for both target material since square plate edges are constraint, as expected. It is observed that plastic deformation and fragmentation events with different plate thickness and impact points in this thesis. Furthermore, it was conducted that a validation analysis before thesis study. It can be said that this verification study is similar with thesis thesis. It was used that a circular polycarbonate plate. Once it was accomplished the validation analysis, it was implemented thesis study.

Ticari araçların arka aks tasarımında gürültü oluşumunun analizi ve tahmini

Noise is one of the major and subsequent problem for automotive industry and prevention of this problem sometimes can be easy if it is component based or isolation problem but if the problem is caused by design and additionally if it is hard to predict this problem's effects on unmanufactured vehicle and it is always hard to prevent this problem because of automotive design duration and phase layout. Therefore it is significant to predict the design sourced problems before the design frozen and vehicle manufactured. In the absence of prototypes, analytical methods such as finite element analysis are very useful in resolving noise and vibration problems, by predicting dynamic behaviour of the automotive components and systems. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a simulation technique and involves making assumptions that affect analytical results. This study handed out an encountered problem of an vehicle rear axle system components design parameters and try to predict this noise propagation according to experienced targets values. Ford Transit medium commercial Jumbo bus vehicle model investigated for this study.According to customer expectations and marketing strategy, new axle variant(Single Rear Wheel-SRW) analysed in nvh perspectives.Since the most important nvh problem is gear whine for a rear axle, the connection between gears modelled specifically with using Hypoid gear simulation tool(HGSiM). Modal and FRF analysis were performed at Optistruct tool. Results compared with previous axle model(Double Rear Wheel-DRW) and accordingly compared with test results for future studies. As design effect to noise and vibration, rear axle tube thickness and final drive ratio are investigated and compared. This study help to understand a vehicle design related nvh problem and direct the design to prevent issues before the vehicle manufactured.Numerical studies make benefits to manufacturer as a cost and time saving improvements. Therefore this kind studies are very important for automotive industry.

Yakıt çalkalanmalı uzay araçları için stabilite kontrol problemi

Sloshing is caused by any disturbance of free liquid surface in a partially filled tank. Depending on the peak accelerations in any direction or the shape of container, the free surface of liquid can be subjected to different types of motion either symmetric or asymmetric. These types of motion have significant influence on vehicles which have liquid fuel in their tanks. Owing to the fact that fuel sloshing plays a crucial role in the stability of the vehicles, many diversified engineering departments give considerable attention to this problem. To prevent structural damages for vehicles with liquid fuel such as trucks on highways, cars, ships, space vehicles, new designs of tanks are evaluated and loss of the stability due to sloshing is tried to minimise. To prevent sloshing effects, physical barriers are placed into the fuel tank such as baffles or containers are designed by using bladders. Main purpose of these designes is to limit the movement of liquid fuel. But these techniques increase both the mission cost and the weight of the tank of spacecraft. The natural frequency of motion of liquid is related to two main factors (i) the shape of tank and (ii) the acceleration of gravity or the axial acceleration of vehicle. A liquid's motion contains an infinite number of natural frequencies, however the lowest few modes of frequencies are the most important for vehicle. When the natural frequency of liquid fuel coincides with the frequency of the vehicle, this situation generates resonance and damages the structure. Near resonance, the fluid's motion loses linearity and nonlinear representation starts to be valid. An analytical approach to sloshing has some limits to obtain a solution. Factors like tank shape, existence of external forces etc. have a great importance to design a model for sloshing phenomena. By taking into consideration the factors, to use an equivalent mechanical model becomes a realistic approach to liquid dynamics in closed tanks. Primal parameters of liquid are qualified and by utilizing these parameters, equivalent mechanical models are designed. Some rules must be followed before equivalent mechanical models are created. Firstly, passing from the liquid material to rigid masses, the change of masses and moments of inertia must be preserved. Then, center of gravity must be unchangeable. The equivalent models produce the same frequency range as liquid model does. Lastly, the system must come up with the results which is equivalent to real material. Having regard to these conditions, physical parameters must be determined, then the system is designed. The major objective of this thesis is to investigate the case of sloshing in space vehicles by utilizing equivalent mechanical models. Mass-spring system is one of the models, and for small oscillations, it becomes the most appropriate model. It replaces the liquid fuel by becoming inner-rigid-masses corresponding to first few slosh modes. As a result of axial and transverse accelerations of space vehicle, the inner-masses begin to oscillate and have a great impression on the stability of vehicle. After designing an acceptable model, to investigate the stability, optimal feedback law and Lyapunov-based control law are utilized. Firstly, the model is designed with two-inner-masses and the results of simulations are demonstrated. Then, the model with four-inner-masses are designed and same steps are applied to it in order to show the stability of the spacecraft. When large-amplitude oscillations occur, mass-spring system is no longer sufficient to demonstrate the change in the stability of spacecraft. In such a case, simple-pendulum model accommodates to the circumstances and describes relatively large motions. For sloshing due to a nonplanar or rotational motion, simple-pendulum model fits to real life cases excellently. The main purpose is to derive the equations of motion of spacecraft by means of these two model. Utilizing the mass-spring-system and simple-pendulum model, the motion of vehicle in a specific time and plane can be estimated. Moreover, the stability of the space vehicle can be investigated by taking advantages of Linear Quadratic Regulator and Lyapunov-based control laws. Apart from these two cases, space vehicle is investigated under lateral and pitching excitations. The equations of motion are derived by using the same parameters and they are compared to each other. In previous models, it is assumed that there are no external forces or moments. But in these models, important thing is the change of force and moment equations for either mass-spring system or simple-pendulum system under excitations. Moreover, in these systems, gravitational effects are not neglected.

The current study aims to develop an in-house code to estimate loads for a flapping wing using Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) data. For the sake of simplicity, pure plunge motion is considered and experiments were performed using different space and time resolutions to assess the performance of the load estimation. Then, the developed code has been tested for different plunge motion cases. Although the study is focused on the load estimation, it make uses of a large quantity of DPIV and direct force measurement data. In order to calculate the force acting on the flapping airfoil, Reynolds Transport Theorem (RTT) can be utilized. As the velocity field is provided by the DPIV data in time, in order to compute the forces acting on the body, one has to obtain the pressure field around it. Present study includes the estimation of forces by using the pressure field which is obtained by the explicit integration of planar pressure gradients. The pressure gradients are obtained by the use of Navier-Stokes Equations in two-dimensional form. In Navier-Stokes Equations, material derivative is required to compute the pressure gradients. In order to compute the material derivative, two methods are used succesively in this work, namely Eulerian and Lagrangian approaches. The thesis describes the algorithm in detail with its variations. As a result higher order differentiation and surface integral for unsteady term yielded a better performance in force prediction. According to the sensitivity analyses, a spatial resolution of 3% of the chord and a field of view covering all the amplitude of motion gave a satisfactory results with a temporal resolution expressed as 40 vector fields per cycle of motion. In terms of DPIV post-processing, average correlation was found to reduce the noise as it is expected. On the other hand, the estimated load matched better the direct measurement when it was phase averaged and filtered. It should be noted that the compared direct measurement results were also 1 Hz filtered. For all the investigated results, both for the sensitivity analyses and general plunge cases, lift coefficient variation was in general predicted well, in agreement with the direct force measurements, however the estimated drag coefficient variation had a very large discrepancy with the direct force measurements. This might be due to the neglected viscous term. Consequently, the fact disabled thrust/drag analyses for plunge cases. Estimation of the lift force coefficient variation exhibited a nearly perfect match even on the instantaneous results when the plunge motion has the lowest frequency and the largest amplitude.

Preliminary orbit determination methods are detailed. Then, the best preliminary orbit determination methods for optical and radar systems are selected to apply to the inputs for this thesis. Success of Gauss method is proved for angle only data orbital problems and Gibbs method is the best orbit determining method for radar systems. Orbit determination code is written for Gauss and Gibbs method in Matlab. Right ascension and declination data for the specified time are measured by telescope in Turksat Main Campus. Then, these data are used as input for Gauss method, so orbital parameters and state vectors are found. Likewise, range, azimuth and elevation data of the Turksat satellites for the specified time are measured by antenna in Turksat Main Campus. Then, these data are used as input for Gibbs method, so orbital parameters and state vectors are found. There is selection button for using telescope and antenna data in Gauss method Matlab code to find orbital parameters and just compare the results and reliability of telescope and antenna data. For this reason, right ascension and declination is calculated in the code by using azimuth and elevation data for antenna choice. Furthermore, a free open source planetarium software Stellarium that shows 3D simulation of sky and gives angle and position data is utilized to compare results that are calculated using the measured data in Turksat. Additionally, GORDAM software orbital parameter results, that was used by Turksat for orbit determination, was obtained for comparison.

Çok katmanlı yüzeylere sahip kalınlıkça sivrilen sandviç plakların anlık basınç yüklemesi altındaki lineer olmayan dinamik davranışı

A sandwich structure is a class of composite material which is manufactured by attaching two thin laminated stiff faces to a core which is lighter and less stiff. Sandwich structures have a wide application area in aerospace, defence and marine industry. Sandwich and laminated composite components such as panels can have variable thickness in some cases while the others have constant thickness according to design, geometric necessities and minimum weight requirements. A tapered effect in thickness can be sometimes sufficient to obtain the variable thickness. The crucial point to design more durable sandwich structures is predicting dynamic responses of them when they are subjected to various types of transient dynamics loadings. This study focuses on the sandwich structure as a plate and the transient dynamic load as explosive air blast waves. Air blast loads occur on supersonic and hypersonic flights due to turbulences, sonic boom and shock waves. Sonic boom is a phenomenon and aerospace structures are subjected to sonic booms that cause shock waves while aircrafts, rockets and missiles reach and pass the speed of sound on flights. On the other hand, an explosion is another phenomenon which is the result of a rapid release of energy because of an explosive event. Chemical explosions like bombs, nuclear explosions, fuel explosions, etc. can be a blast source which causes overpressure. In this study, nonlinear dynamic behaviour of composite sandwich plates with variable thickness subjected to time dependent pressure pulse has been investigated by an analytical model, experimental model and finite element method (FEM). Tapered plate subjected to air blast loading is considered as a design model for the variable thickness and pressure pulse. The tapered sandwich plate has a honeycomb core and laminated composite face sheets. In the first part of study, the tapering thickness is varying for both sandwich core and face sheets together in case of simply supported boundary conditions for all edges. Moreover, a tapered sandwich plate which has a thickness varying for only sandwich core, is analysed for clamped boundary conditions for all edges to include the experimental model into the second part of study. Clamped sandwich plate with both tapered sandwich core and tapered face sheets is also considered. The theoretical method is based on a sandwich plate theory including the large deformation effects, such as geometric nonlinearities, in-plane stiffness and inertias, and shear deformation. The geometric nonlinearity effects are taken into account by using the von Kármán large deflection theory of thin plates. The classical sandwich plate theory for plates with constant thickness which have one-layered face sheets found in the literature is developed to analyse the tapered sandwich plates with multi-layered face sheets. The equations of motion for the plate are derived by the use of the virtual work principle. Approximate solution functions are assumed for the space domain and substituted into the equations of motion. The Galerkin method is used to obtain the nonlinear differential equations in the time domain. The finite difference method is applied to solve the system of coupled nonlinear equations. Finally, the equations of motion are reduced into a form that can be easily solved by one of the methods for solution of linear equation systems such as LU decomposition. The displacement-time and strain-time histories are obtained on certain points through the tapered direction. Then, the results obtained by using the present method are compared with the ones obtained by using a commercial finite element package ANSYS and the experimental method. The effects of taper ratio, the stacking sequence and the fiber orientation angle on the dynamic responses of the tapered sandwich plates are also investigated for the simply supported boundary condition. The simply supported and clamped tapered plates are discretized using 28x28 eight nodded layered shell elements (Shell281) which have the geometric nonlinearity capability for the FEM. Shell 281 has six degrees of freedom which are at each node. Three degrees of freedom is in translation while three is in rotation. These types of shell elements are not only typically described as geometrically planar elements, but also they are spatially 3D elements. Shell elements are very used to model thin and thick shell and plate structures which are subjected to bending. The total number of elements, 784 is satisfactory and is chosen as based on the mesh sensitivity analysis. The individual laminas (laminated faces and core) are assumed to be perfectly bonded in the finite element model. Finite element analysis is examined for only tapered sandwich plate that has both a tapering core and tapered faces because of the restrictions of defining the tapering function in FEM. The experimental studies contain manufacturing a tapered sandwich plate, determining mechanical properties of the constituents and finally simulating an environment of the blast effect with a two stage procedure. At first, blast load tests for transient pressure measurement on a plexiglass model plate are done. Then, air blast load tests on the real tapered sandwich clamped plate are carried out for measuring strain and acceleration at certain points. Acceleration data work useful on obtaining displacement-time histories experimentally. The experimental model presented here can reduce the period of time and can be defined as low cost in comparison with conventional tests by using the mentioned two stage procedure. Polyester film membranes for bursting which are used in this study are also very practical and cheap for the blast testing. There is a good correlation between not only the results of theory and FEM for simply supported tapered sandwich plate but also the results of the experimental model and theory with FEM for the clamped tapered plate. The closed form solution presented here costs much lower computer time compared to the FEM. The experimental studies are a troublesome process anyway which have a long period of time. However, the testing process is strongly needful for the validation of the theory. The code is once validated with the test, then the theory can be carried out the desired design of plates. Because, it is very easy to change design parameters for the theory. The method present here can be used in preliminary design of sandwich and laminated plates with variable thickness. The method is very capable of predicting the nonlinear dynamic response of the tapered sandwich plate with multi-layered faces. The thickness variation is taken as a linear function of coordinate axis in this study. However, the thickness variation could be taken as the second or third degree functions of coordinate axis. The blast pressure is uniformly distributed on the tapered plate. Tapered sandwich plates could be more functional under the effect of non-uniform pressure distribution. The thicker part of the tapered plate could be subjected to higher pressure load while the thinner part is subjected to lower pressure load.

Kokpit otomasyonu tabanlı 4D rota planlaması

Considering the transformation in roles of existing air traffic management technologies, future flight operations and flight deck systems will need additional avionics and operational procedures that involve adaptive algorithms and advanced decision support tools. The first part of the thesis presents novel visual flight deck decision support tools and interfaces utilizing next generation synthetic vision and augmented reality based visualisation technologies in order to meet the requirements of the future flight operations defined in NextGen and SESAR 2020+ visions. These avionics are envisioned to aid pilots for conducting their new in-flight tasks such as; collaborative tactical planning with intent negotiation/sharing; fully understanding/analysing/interpreting solution with their alternatives and proposing modification on the solution subject to negotiation; and aware of required response, execute it or allow collision avoidance module to perform its automated response. Visual Decision Support Tools allow the flight crew to interact with new autonomous systems and provide with visual understanding on the evolving flight operation by fusing all tactical level data and visualising them. In this work, two groups of display structure have been proposed. A split head-down Synthetic Vision screen pair aims to support the pilots in managing both low level and high level tactical tasks with fully understanding the situation in 4D. Synthetic Vision Display (SVD) side provides the pilots synthetic vision and also incorporates required additional guidance and limited operational information. 4D Operational Display (4DOD) provides higher level operational information giving building enhanced understanding on the states of the operation and results of any modification on processing flight intent. Haptic interfaces allow the flight crew to change demonstrated detail levels in both 2D+time and 3D+time. The other display, which is Head-Up-Display (HUD), provides pilot to efficiently operate flight operation by eliminating the need of looking to head-down screen; and aims to present all essential flight information in the pilot's forward field through augmented reality implementations. For hardware integration and experimental purposes, an integrated testbed including full replica B737-800 Flight Deck Testbed and ATM Testbed has been modified as enabling operational tests and validations of these new tools. The main purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical framework for tactical 4D-trajectory planning and conflict resolution of an aircraft equipped with novel automation tools. The proposed 4D-trajectory-planning method uses recent algorithmic advances in both probabilistic and deterministic methods to fully benefit from both approaches. We have constructed an aircraft performance model based on BADA 4 with high-level hybrid flight template automatons and low-level flight maneuver automatons. This multi-modal flight trajectory approach is utilized to generate cost-efficient local trajectory segments instead of solving complex trajectory-generation problems globally. The proposed sampling-based trajectory planning algorithm spatially explores the airspace and provides proper separation through local trajectory segments and guarantees asymptotic optimality under certain conditions. Moreover, we have integrated the cross-entropy method, which transforms the sampling problem into a stochastic optimization problem, rapidly converges on the minimum cost trajectory sequence by utilizing available flight plans, and reduces the amount of sampling. The integration of the proposed strategies lets us solve challenging, real-time in-tactical 4D-trajectory planning problems within the current and the envisioned future realm of air traffic management systems.
