Impact of micro loans on agricultural production: A case study of wheat production in Bahawalpur, Pakistan
This study aims to investigate the role of Zarai Taraqiati Bank's limited finance through technology adaptation on wheat productivity in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Lack of resources and technology are the main reasons why a lot of underdeveloped economies are not able to fulfill their potential especially in agriculture, which is generally the prime income source and occupation. This study is based on a primary data source collected through a field survey. The simple random sampling and cluster random sampling technique is employed for deriving representative sample from population to establish the relationship response variable and focus variables while controlling for land holding and farmer education. It is concluded that agriculture financing through high-yielding varieties, fertilizer, tractors, and harvesters have a significant impact on wheat productivity. The long-term loans also made a marked impact on wheat productivity, while the household size and education are negatively associated with wheat productivity, but these variables are insignificant. The positive association between long-term loans and agricultural productivity represents that credit enables the farmers to purchase superior quality inputs and equipment which causes an increase in agricultural yield. The study suggests that the in-time provision of the appropriate amount of loan and credit in kind (i.e., fertilizer, tractor etc.) to farmers may increase productivity. As a result, income and assets of the farmers are also enhanced.
The impact of world gold prices on the stock market indices of emerging markets: A panel data analysis
The integration of international financial markets and linkages between financial and economic variables have instigated policymakers to try to influence and exercise control over the behavior of some of these variables through policies and investors to make informed investment decisions. Among such variables are stocks that are traded on stock markets. It performs a vital function in the economy and is easily tradeable. It is therefore prudent that its relationship with other economic and financial variables be known for making informed decisions. This research employed monthly data on gold, exchange, inflation, interest rates, and stock market indexes of 19 emerging economy countries for the period 01/2004-12/2019 to scrutinize the relationship between them with stock as a dependent variable. The dynamic panel ARDL model is employed for the research. The results showed the presence of a long-term relationship between stock indices, gold, exchange, inflation, and interest rates. In the long-term, inflation and interest rates are having highly significant coefficients. Both inflation and interest rates have a negative relationship with stock prices. Gold and exchange rate do not have any significant impact on stock indices in the long-term. However, in the short term, with the exception of inflation, all the variables are significant. Traditional theory holds in the long-term whilst in the short-term, portfolio theory holds. Gold does not serve as a hedge nor a diversifier in the long-term but serves as a diversifier for stocks in the short-term, inflation only has an impact on stock prices in the long-term and interest-bearing assets serve as an alternative investment hub to stocks both in the short and long-term.
Impact of COVID-19 on stock markets; evidence from global equity indices
Does increasing uncertainty and volatility deter investors to benefit from equity diversification on the international market? How did equity indices perform during the COVID-19 pandemic? Using updated daily data from 2010-2021 this study aims at understanding how equity markets have performed in the international financial markets during this period. Can investors diversify their portfolio by investing in more than one equity market? The study also tries to understand the performance of these equity indices during the COVID-19 pandemic, employed as a dummy variable. In this case the study looks at equity indices that performed better and those that have a quick speed of recovery. Vector Error Correction Models (VECM) was used in the study to establish relationship among the 12 equity indices. Results from the study indicates that there are signs of further cointegration in the international equity markets. Adding COVID-19 as a dummy variable to the equation, there are increased number of cointegrating vectors among 12 equity indices included in the study as proxies for global equity indices. Furthermore, the results shows that investors can benefit by investing in particular, equity indices that have exhibited quick speed of recovery from the pandemic record lows. The data for the study was collected from Thompson Reuters and investing.com.
The effects of global oil prices on local stock market indexes of emerging markets: A cross-country analysis
The study investigated the effect of global oil prices on local stock market indexes of emerging markets for both oil exporting and oil importing countries. Data covering the period from January 2010 to March 2021 for 15 emerging countries was used. Two objectives guided the study. First, the impact of global oil prices on local stock markets was assessed. Secondly, the relationship between stock price and changes in macroeconomic variables was investigated. A panel regression model was carried out to analyze the data. The findings show that global oil price is negatively related to stock market index in oil importing countries. On the other hand, the findings revealed that global oil price is positively related to stock market index in oil exporting countries. The findings also reveal that interest rate, consumer price index, exchange rate and industrial production index impact stock markets in emerging economies for both oil exporting and importing countries. Stock market price index moves in opposite direction to interest rate and exchange rate in both oil exporting and oil importing emerging economies. Stock market price index moves in the same direction as industrial production index and consumer price index. The results have policy implications. As the results in this paper have shown, stock markets in emerging economies not only respond to changes in oil price but also to changes in economic fundamentals like interest rate, inflation rate, exchange rate and economic growth. Stock market indexes are often seen as leading economic indicators. Unforeseen shocks in global oil prices may disturb expectations related to economic growth in emerging economies. Therefore, central banks should use required monetary policy tools to offset the consequences of oil price shocks.
Meme hisse senetlerinin borsa üzerindeki etkiii: Gamestop mania
WallStreetBets forum on the popular Reddit platform has drawn the attention of not merely financial market participants, but also policymakers as retail investors gathering in the forum circulate tickers of certain securities and jump on the bandwagon in an attempt to push up the prices. This study examines what transpired in January 2021 trading frenzy in GME which became a meme stock and the star of Redditors and other mania-influenced stocks igniting a battle between retail investors gathering in the forum and Wall Street hedge funds. The study deploys a VAR(p)-process and its structural analysis tools to examine the impact of the trading frenzy by empirically investigating whether an intertwined association significantly differs from the pre-saga time horizon by focusing on the most popular stocks among retail investors during the peak of the mania; GameStop (GME), AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. (AMC), Naked Brand Group (NAKD) and Koss Corporation (KOSS) and the spillovers to the broad market. The daily time frame data covering the period from 23 July 2020 up to 29 June 2021 is divided into two equal data sets and analyzed independently in two separate models. The findings of the work suggest that the trading frenzy caused an intertwined correlation between the targeted securities which was absent in the timespan prior to the saga. This implies that trading risk increases during such trading activity as the stocks become highly correlated. The interconnectedness analyses shows that GME remains a non-transmitter stock despite a considerable increase in its contribution to the explanation of the broad market's return volatility. The study pinpoints that investors, traders, portfolio managers and institutional investors should not base their trading or investment decisions based merely on traditional data, alternative data should also be taken into consideration as they play a crucial role in influencing prices of the to become meme stocks.
The impact of sustainable development goals on the success of online crowdfunding campaigns: An analysis through natural language processing techniques
Online crowdfunding platforms are emerging as a significant alternative potential finance method, which are playing a critical role in mobilizing resources to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This Study investigates the impact of SDG alignment on campaign success and, in addition, tries to find which individual sustainable development goals are more successful on a reward-based crowdfunding platform. By utilizing Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression models on Kickstarter platform dataset of 138393 campaign launch between 2020 to 20204 to assess the relationship SDG alignment and campaign success, measured by the natural logarithms of the total pledged amount and the number of backers, while controlling for campaign duration, sentiment, project category, and geographical region. The findings show that SDG alignment has a statistically significant positive relationship with campaign success. Specifically, SDGs related to environmental such as SDG6 (Clean Water), SDG13 (Climate Action), and SDG14 (Life Below Water) significantly increase funding success. Conversely, campaigns focusing on basic needs such as SDG1 (No Poverty), SDG2 (Zero Hunger), SDG3 (Good Health), and SDG4 vi (Quality Education) tended to attract less funding and fewer backers on the Kickstarter platform. Sentiment in descriptions also contributes positively to the campaign's success, and campaign durations have a negative impact. Additionally, there are significant regional and category differences, with campaigns in the Asia-Pacific area and categories like Comics, Design, and Games performing better than those in North America and the Art category. These results offer practical implications for campaign creators, highlighting the strategic benefit of incorporating specific SDG themes, particularly environmental and justice-oriented ones, coupled with positive messaging and concise campaign timelines, while tailoring approaches to regional and categorical contexts to maximize crowdfunding success on reward-based platforms.
Trends and patterns of poultry consumption in different regions of the world and Türkiye
The poultry sector is one of the most important industries, playing a vital role in closing the animal protein gap due to its ease, speed of production, and affordability. Moreover, health-conscious consumers are increasingly opting for poultry meat, a more affordable and lower-fat alternative to red meat. This thesis examines the underlying factors influencing poultry consumption, focusing on the national population, economic impacts, exports, urbanization, elderly population trends, and secondary education. The dataset comprises the comprehensive period from 1990 to 2021 and includes a broad range of countries, including Turkiye, enabling a comparative analysis of poultry consumption trends across different nationals and periods. The findings reveal a positive correlation between GDP per capita, population, and poultry consumption. Furthermore, the study highlights the consistent and positive impact of education. This research provides suggestions for policymakers and industry stakeholders on key factors that should receive greater consideration. Keywords: Chicken Meat, Poultry consumption, Socio-Economic and Demographic Factors, Turkiye & World
Housing finance for conventional and Islamic banks in Turkish banking system
As it is known, the global financial crisis through 2008-2009 in the world had also affected Turkish economy. This crisis pushed Turkey to implement the macro-prudential policies to avoid potential future crises. In that respect, this thesis aims at examining the effectiveness of LTV policy in reducing systemic risk arising from property markets, and to examine if it has the same impact for conventional and Islamic banks in Turkey. For this purpose, housing finance in conventional and Islamic banks are reviewed, and impact of LTV policy in conventional and Islamic banks in Turkey is explained. Further, the relationship between the amount of housing loans and their delinquencies in conventional and Islamic banks and LTV policy is analyzed with tests of difference, Chow test and time-series regressions between the non-LTV period and LTV-period. These tests show that the response of the amount of housing loans and mortgage delinquency to LTV intervention in conventional banks is greater than in Islamic banks.

Lease-debt relationship in corporations
This study is about the relationship between lease propensity and debt in corporations. We investigated whether there is a substitutionary or complementary relationship between lease and debt. Two different samples are used such as a sample of Turkish public companies traded on Borsa Istanbul (BIST) and a sample of public companies from the BRICS countries. The BIST sample consists of 147 firms and 62 quarterly data between the years 2004Q3-2019Q4. As a result, there are 9114 firm-level data. The BRICS sample consists of annual data for 760 public firms from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa between 2009 and 2018. Totally, 7600 firm-level data. Panel tobit regression method which is proper for limited dependent variable model ran to investigate the relationship between lease and debt for both samples. In both samples, the relationship between lease and debt decisions in corporations was examined. While examining the relationship between leasing and debt, other financial and economic factors were also used as control variables for robustness. Size of the firms, the collateral amount, the liquidity, the tax rate, the profitability, retained earnings, the growth opportunities, the financial distress level, age of the company, exchange rate difference and interest rate of companies are the factors we control when examining the relationship between leasing and debt. In the second part of the study, it was checked whether there was a significant change on the lease propensity according to the sectors. In the third part of the study, it was investigated whether factors such as size of the firms, the collateral amount, the liquidity, the tax rate, the profitability, retained earnings, the growth opportunities, the financial distress level, age of the company, exchange rate difference and interest rate of companies have an effect on the leasing propensity when the firms are at the same debt level. In the fourth part of the study, it was investigated whether there is a significant change according to the sectors in which the companies with the same debt level are included. Finally, the above-mentioned analyses were repeated using the subsamples of small & medium enterprises (SMEs) and large enterprises (LEs) for both BIST and BRICS firms. In the sample of Borsa Istanbul, the relationship between lease and debt is complement. Strong and significant relationships were found between lease and collateral amount, past and current profitability, financial distress, firm age, changes in interest rates, firm size, and USD-TL exchange rate change. According to industry research, we found that in the consumer staples, consumer discretionary, information technology, real estate sectors, they resort to borrowing rather than lease. For companies with the same debt level, a significant relationship was found between the lease and firm age, the amount of collateral, the interest rate, and the effective tax rate. Moreover, the effect of the change in VAT rates between 2007 and 2018, which is a factor that was studied for the Borsa Istanbul sample and not for the Brics sample, was found to be significant and negative. For the SMEs listed on the BIST, no significant result could be reached when the relationship between the lease and the debt is examined. When the relationship between leasing and debt for LEs listed on BIST is examined, it is concluded that there is a complementary relationship. In the empirical study, we conducted with the sample of Brics countries listed firms, the relationship between lease and debt was substitute. Strong and significant results were also obtained between the other financial and economic factors that we used in order to obtain more robust results and the lease propensity. Of these, significant and strong results emerged between profitability, firm age, exchange rate and leasing. At the same debt level, significant and strong results were obtained between leasing and exchange rate difference, interest rate, and firm age. We conducted the research among SMEs and LEs to check which financial factors are changing the leasing trends of SMEs and LEs. For SMEs, no significant relationship was found between lease and debt. The results of the relationship between lease and debt for LEs differ according to debt definitions, and strong results have been achieved. In addition, for the BRICS sample, the relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a measure of development level and lease propensity is examined. We see that as the annual gross domestic product of the countries increases, they tend to lease more. Furthermore, lease rates of companies with the same debt level increase significantly with the increase in the annual gross domestic product GDP values of the countries. Firms with the same level of debt from countries with higher levels of development tend to use more leases. To this author's knowledge, we expand prior research on debt-lease relationships by considering a sample of all BRICS countries as well as Turkish public firms, and including interaction terms in the analyses. The findings of this study would be a guide for creditors and leasing companies in terms of identifying potential customers, and for investors in terms of understanding corporate decisions. Temerrüt riski ne kadar sistematiktir?
This study aims to provide an extensive analysis of systematic (market-wide) and systemic (sector-wide and industry-wide) components of the idiosyncratic default risk. We detect significant heterogeneity among the default risk structure of various industry groups. More specifically, the default probability of institutions affiliated with certain industry groups is more strongly linked to industry-wide risks while others are more heavily tied to sector-wide risks. We further show that systematic and systemic components of default risk alter also relative to up/down market cycles for each industry group. That is, the default risk of companies associated with certain industry groups proves systematic in both uptrends and downtrends whereas others induce the market risk during only bullish or bearish market states. We further consider a scenario where higher default risk of firms belonging to a specific industry group aggravates the sector risks other than its own and find that an increase in the default risk of various industry groups can in fact destabilize one or more sectors. We notice that the stability of firms within specific industry groups matter more than others for the health of an economy and the wealth of its participants, regardless of the market state while others carry weight with respect to market cycles. Our findings on the direct linkages between idiosyncratic default risk and systematic and systemic risks among financial and non-financial firms provide valuable insights for investors as well as policy makers.
