Stereotypical Representation of Women: A Case Study of Nigerian Television Advertisements

The consistent representation of women in the media has received a huge amount of responses and has been an area of study for many researchers. Amongst other forms of media, television advertisement has been regarded as the most effective form of communication in the capitalist marketing industry. Advertisers have been found to spend so much money on researches related to gender and sex, because it enables good market segmentation. However, the advertisement industry has been blamed for prevalent stereotypes that exist in our society especially because these stereotypes reinforce gender inequality and subordination where women belong to a marginalized group. The aim of this research is to contribute to existing researches done in creating an understanding of the prevailing stereotypes in television advertising and to create an awareness of how gender is represented in Nigerian television advertisements, using 40 television commercials randomly chosen form 3 different Nigerian broadcast stations namely NTA, AIT and STV. This research is important because it serves as a form of media literacy especially because the research employs cultivation theory to explain how media cultivates us and influences our identity. The study also urges potential and prospective advertisers to practice advertising more ethically and also provide substantial evidence to audiences and consumers so as to be more critical and aware of the effect of TV on our values, beliefs and ideas. This research was carried out in order to reveal the consistency in how women are portrayed by the kinds of roles women play in Nigerian television advertisements. The researcher used content analysis to achieve this because it is a suitable method used to analyse texts especially media texts. Further, the researcher used survey method and distributes questionnaires to find out audience responses towards the stereotypical portrayal of women in Nigeria television advertisements. One major finding among others from this research is that the roles women play are limited based on the stereotypes that exists in the Nigerian culture. Hence, women play roles as the perfect house wife in other words, domesticated, i.e. as mothers, cooks, chid carers, and cleaners. Context Analysis of Advertising Design: A New Context-Based Semiotic Approach

This research tried to validate a new approach to semiotic analysis in advertising posters. The aim of writing this thesis was to reveal a new approach in dealing with signs and the way it is used in advertising design. Due to the nature of advertising designs they are constructed on the selection and combination of signs and because of this, people can also select and perceive some of the signs in advertisings posters. Based on the results, it is possible to say that there are no absolute parameters to design an advertising poster in which all the receivers will have the same understanding. Designers aren’t the only ones that will select and combine signs also readers of the text follow the same procedure in order to read the signs. These differences in interpretation is based on the differentiation of understanding Context B and the Context C of each receiver which is due to the information available from the individual perception of the so-called Context B and Context C. Based on the results and findings of this research, the researcher has proven that not only the human perception is different from individual to individual in advertising posters, also it is depended on the three context which the researcher called Context A the linguistic context, Context B the situational context and Context C which is the background knowledge of each individual. These variations in interpretation and perception of advertising posters have three main reasons that can be concluded as three contexts. Some people do not select and perceive all the sentences, including linguistics and/or non-linguistics sentences. The difference in the situational context can be the reason of reading the text in different ways, due to the fact that the knowledge of individuals can be different, consciously and/or unconsciously this knowledge can affect the way that an individual read and understand a advertising posters. Oil Spills, Climate Change, Pollution and Land Decay: Media Framing of Environmental Issues in the Iraqi Media

Iraq is a significant country in the Middle East and significant natural resources in Iraq include natural gas and petroleum. Refining Iraqi oil causes serious environmental issues such as oil spillage, air, water, and land pollution and all of these problems contribute to climate change. Several studies have associated air, water, and land pollution with wars and oil spillage which is a form of pollution that can be viewed from the perspective of intentional and unintentional acts. In many cases, the way the media presents their understanding of the issue instead of how the audiences understand it and should understand it. As a result of the limited comprehensive study dissecting the diverse media frame of oil spills, pollution, and land decay in Iraq, this study is necessary to fill this research vacuum by evaluating the media framing of oil spills, pollution, and land decay in Iraq. Quantitative content analysis in combination with frame theory and agenda-setting theory was applied to examine the reflection of newspapers in media framing of oil spills, climate change, pollution, and land destruction in Iraq. The study concludes that news on environmental issues has been well discussed in the Iraqi media. The reflexivity shown in newspaper coverage suggests that Iraqi investigative journalism may play an advocacy role in portraying environmental problems in a reactive manner that confronts and criticizes Iraq's official goals. The study recommends that since newspapers are a widely used news medium in Iraq, news can now be sent to individual residents via social media 24 hours a day.
