İlahi ve dünyevi haritacılık: Ortaçağ Akdeniz'inde haritalarda dini sembolizm temsillerinin karşılaştırmalı bir analizi

This thesis explores the use of religious symbolism in medieval Mediterranean cartography, comparing Islamic, Christian, and Jewish mapping traditions. By focusing on key works such as the Tabula Rogeriana, Catalan Atlas, and Book of Curiosities, it demonstrates how maps reflected both geographic knowledge and religious expression, culminating in sacred spatial representations. The study reveals how cross-cultural exchanges in the Mediterranean shaped symbolic depictions of sacred geography, leading to the development of distinct cartographic traditions. This comparative analysis underscores the role of maps in conveying religious and cultural identity during the Middle Ages, highlighting the interconnectedness of the Mediterranean.

Ortaçağ'da aşk büyüsü: Duyguların aşk büyüsü kullanımındaki itici gücü

This thesis examines the concept of love magic and its importance in historical studies, mainly within the Kingdom of England and the Iberian and Italian Peninsulas during the Middle Ages as a whole, while placing a particular emphasis on the 11th to 13th centuries. The research also incorporates insights from the History of Emotions with the aim of highlighting the place of emotions in magical studies. Intending to understand the role of emotions for the practice of magic and how it has influenced society, the following chapters analyze the sources, Picatrix, Cligès, Tristan and Iseult, Corrector sive Medicus, as well as individual cases where love magic has been used or was assumed to be used, showcasing the importance of love-magic for society, interpersonal relations, and various other aspects of everyday life and politics of the Middle Ages. In light of this, the following thesis aims to contribute to the literature by demonstrating that the use of magic is closely tied to emotions as motivating factors. Therefore, without a thorough understanding of the relationship between emotions and magical studies, research on love magic would be incomplete. Surprisingly, the analysis of love magic in the Middle Ages not only shows what interpersonal relationships were like during that period but also offers insights into the gender roles and power dynamics of the era. One aspect that is particularly attention-grabbing is that, as examined in this thesis, love magic has been used not only for enhancing personal relationships but also for self-protection and political advantage.

"Efendisine Sabırla Katlanacaktır": Geoffroy de la Tour Landry'nin kitabında hiyerarşiler ve duygular

This thesis aims to examine a fourteenth-century work written by Geoffroy de La Tour Landry, a knight from Anjou. The book was written between 1371 and 1372 CE, and was meant to educate the knight's daughters in religious and noble matters, and also to teach them how to read. The knight's book is composed of various stories some of which are from his own experience while most are Biblical or stories with no particular setting. This thesis employs close-reading methods to understand the knight's perspectives of social hierarchies, his attitudes towards social groups. The thesis applies the methods of the history of emotions to explore the knight's emotional world and what lessons he teaches to his daughters by focusing on two emotions: love and fear. The knight shows deep devotion to religious matters and to charity towards lesser orders, despite the turmoil of the fourteenth-century, while having a moderateamount of distrust towards the highest orders of society especially in regards to his daughters. The knight also utilizes emotions in his book and by combining love and fear, constructs an emotional framework for his daughters that ensures that they will obey their husbands at all costs. Earlier works on the knight's book have mostly focused on pedagogical aspects. This thesis reexamines the knight's book from two perspectives to reintroduce a valuable vernacular work from the Middle Ages into academic discourse. This book can contextualize late medieval society from the perspective of a knight in two regards: social and emotional life.

Erken modern dönem İngiltere'sindeyi şeytan çıkarma, savma ve şeytan çarpması: John Darrell'ın vakaralı ışığında 'İblisleri' defetme

This study analyzes the phenomenon of demonic possession and the rite of exorcism in early modern England and traces the debates over the reality of demonic activity such as possession in both Catholic and Protestant circles, particularly through the dispossession cases of the controversial minister, John Darrell. It examines the pamphlets, treatises, and texts which shaped the demonology of the early modern period, and which contributed significantly to the development of the image of the Devil as man's tormentor and corroborated his influence in the physical world. In doing so, it argues that demonic possession was regarded as an actual phenomenon in the early modern English society which cannot be explained only through medical and/or psychological reasons, and that it was a combination of social, economic, religious, and political factors in addition to medical explanations that gave rise to cases of demonic possession and ensuing exorcisms. Keywords: Demoniac, Demonic Possession, Devil, Dispossession, Exorcism

Wilson, Lenin'e karşı yeni bir yorum: Yeni bir dünya düzeninin çatışan fikirleri

The Great War brought destruction and death when it got unleashed with the bullet of an assassin in 1914. Yet, this was also the beginning of a New Order as much as being the end of the Old Order. The forerunners of this New Era came from two distinct corners of the world, namely America and Russia when Thomas Woodrow Wilson and Vladimir Ilyich "Lenin" Ulyanov proposed their peace formulae with the Fourteen Points of January 1918 and the Soviet Peace Decree of October 1917. This study provides an analysis of the differences and parallels between these formulae. In order to meet this objective, the individual biographies of Wilson and Lenin, and the histories of the United States and Russia are examined in detail as it is argued that the given features of these declarations were the consequences of the different personal experiences and cultural backgrounds of these two leaders as well as the domestic issues and histories of their countries. The study is structured around the main argument that Wilson and Lenin recognized the Great War as the ultimate crisis of the Old World with their parallel arguments. They saw the end of the Imperial Era, and in this matter, they offered new military, diplomatic and economic norms of the New World. Nevertheless, Wilson and Lenin had very different reasons, methods and designs for the New Order. These different discourses were the origins of both order and disorder of the New Era.

Refakatsiz çocuklar: Almanya'nın ABD işgal altındaki bölgesinde yerinden edilmiş çocuklar ve UNRRA (1945-1947)

After World War II the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) was tasked with providing assistance to millions of displaced people in Europe including unaccompanied children discovered in the US Zone of Occupied Germany. Mainly victims of Germanization, UNRRA's mission was to identify the nationalities of the children and to rehabilitate them through renationalization and repatriation. Determining the nationalities of the children was not as clear cut as UNRRA anticipated it to be. To have an understanding of the difficulties UNRRA faced, the relationship between UNRRA and other governing bodies such as OMGUS (Office of Military Government, United States), German authorities and the officials representing Central and Eastern European Governments need to be explored as their objectives did not necessarily align with each other. OMGUS was unwilling to remove the children due to protests from German authorities while the Central and Eastern European governments called for repatriation. UNRRA sided with these governments but the actions they could take were limited as they operated under OMGUS's authority. In support of the German authorities, OMGUS introduced policies with the aim of preventing UNRRA and the liaison officers from removing the children from German homes and institutions. This thesis argues that UNRRA's process of determination of nationality became a cause of confusion and disagreement amongst the different bodies dealing with the unaccompanied children. UNRRA's attempts to overturn OMGUS's policies shows that these competing objectives were detrimental to UNRRA's mission and led to its child search operations come to a standstill.

On üçüncü yüzyıldaki iki iç savaşa odaklanarak Kral John ve Kral III. Henry dönemlerinde "Cinque Ports" şehirlerinin incelenmesi

Situated on the shores of the historic counties of Kent and Sussex on the South-East coast of England, the Cinque Ports were a group of port towns which provided ship service to the kings in exchange for certain privileges in the Middle Ages. Although the organization was originally made up of five port towns; Dover, Hastings, Hythe, Romney, and Sandwich, later additions were made, the most notable ones being the inclusion of Rye and Winchelsea in the late twelfth century. This thesis is a study of the Cinque Ports in the reigns of King John and King Henry III. The focal point of the study is the involvement of the Cinque Ports in the two civil wars of the thirteenth century, which took place in 1215-17 and 1264-7. The purpose of the thesis is to contextualize the actions of the Cinque Ports by comparing them in the two civil wars. In both of the civil wars, the Cinque Ports became a war zone, and their control was perceived as crucial by the main political actors. However, the difference in the political movements preceding the two civil wars, and the environmental changes in the Cinque Ports coastline led to the distinctness in their participation in the two civil wars.

Tarihin arkasında: İngiliz etiket kitapları ve on dokuzuncu yüzyılın kadın algıları

The Victorian era is a vital period in terms of intellectual and social changes, in addition to the industrial revolution and urbanization. This study aims to analyze nineteenth century English etiquette books and perceptions of women. The main circle of this study is to reveal how women were exposed to gender inequalities during this period. Since the archetype of the perfect women as mothers and wives was idealised through the norms of the society, etiquette books focused on women and feminine issues, their roles were limited to domestic spheres in these books. Besides, it would be necessary to mention the society with discussion of etiquette that played a significant role as it touched many middle class lives. For this reason, different etiquette books were chosen to portray the conditions of women and society.

Britanya'nın Akdeniz üzerindeki emellerinin müttefikler'in Türkiye'yi İkinci Dünya Savaşı'na sokma çabaları üzerindeki etkileri

Turkish belligerency which was not quite desired by Britain during the World War II was interwoven with the British ambitions in the Mediterranean including the post-World War II settlement of the region into the British sphere of influence. The importance of the Mediterranean and its effect on Anglo-Turkish relations during the World War II has been narrated through Britain's point of view in the literature considering that the region was one of the life-lines of British Empire. However, the Eastern Mediterranean was also a primary concern for Turkey. Since the 1930s as the recent literature confirms, Italy was perceived as the biggest possible threat to Turkey as all the military preparations were made accordingly by the Turkish state. The total 4.400 km of Turkish Mediterranean and Aegean coastline combined with the young Republic's obsolete and impotent navy, and the close proximity of numerous foreign islands, made Turkey equally apprehensive for the situation in the region since the opening rounds of the war. Thanks to the opening of the Soviet archives, and published British intelligence records alongside the important secondary sources, we now have a better understanding of Turkey's relations with the major belligerents. With this motivation and along this line of research this thesis aims to show the relation between Britain's Mediterranean strategy and Turkey's belligerency.

On beşinci yüzyılda centilmen'i aramak: "St. Albans kitabı"

This thesis explains the concept of "gentleman" and its place in the social and cultural world of fifteenth-century England. To this end it examines the Book of St. Albans, compiled by a mysterious individual towards the end of the century, which is concerned with the aristocratic pastimes and pursuits of the time. Familiarity with aristocratic codes and manners helped individuals create beneficial social connections and command respect, resulting in better social standing. Namely, an increasing interest in aristocratic culture was the result of a widespread presumption that manners and adequate knowledge of the gentle world would be enough to pass as a "gentleman". In this context, the Book of St. Albans is regarded as an example of courtesy writings whose principal aim was to instruct people on the complex cultural world of the aristocracy to better their chances of success in the highly competitive real world. For modern historians, the importance of these works lies in the definitions that they provide regarding "gentility" and its place in the social world of late medieval England.
