Telegörsel ontolojinin boyutları: Televizyondaki zamanın simyası
ABSTRACT DIMENSIONS OF TELEVISUAL ONTOLOGY: THE ALCHEMY OF TIME IN TELEVISION Başak Şenova Ph. D. in A.D.A Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Mutman May, 1999 Departing from the social status of television in our time, this thesis investigates the dimensions of televisual ontology by concentrating on television's basic logic of operation, which is generated by time. By discussing the concept of time and capitalism with relation to television's logic of operation, this thesis appoints every qualitative and quantitative aspect of television to investigate how they operate and communicate with each other. When the logic of operation of television is considered, a concealed mechanism which, operates underneath the quantitative and the qualitative aspects of television is found. Hence, this mechanism is directed by the movement of time in televisual flow. Therefore, this thesis intents to take over the project of investigating the mentioned mechanism. To demonstrate this mechanism, this thesis also involves a case study, which presents a comparative analysis of Turkish television channels. Consequently, dimensions of the televisual ontology is examined by taking the logic of late-capitalism as the frame of this study. Key Words: Television, Time, Capitalism, Televisual Flow, and Mechanism
Görsel okur-yazarlık, üst-kurmaca ve korku filmleri: Yeni stalker filminde kendi üzerine düşünen kurgu olgusunun değerlendirilmesi
ABSTRACT VISUAL LITERACY, METAFICTION, AND HORROR MOVIES: AN ACCOUNT OF SELF-REFLEXIVITY IN THE NEW STALKER FILM Orhan Anafarta Ph. D. in A.D.A Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Mutman July, 2001 This study investigates the significance of metafiction, game, and visual literacy as they relate to today's changing practices of spectatorship. These concepts are elaborated in relation to the rebirth of the eighties' horror film genre 'stalker' as a self- reflexive text in the nineties. Scream (Wes Craven, 1996) is taken as the purest specimen of the 'new stalker' in which the above- mentioned concepts can be observed with clarity.
When figuring the body is at stake within the Western tradition of art, figuration comes up as a question of framing and controlling the mass of body (flesh, bones, body liquids etc...). The apparent obsession of Western art with perfect body figures might be understood as an attempt to make safe the permeable boundary between the inside and outside of the body; between the inner self and outside world. Yet the depictions of human body in Francis Bacon's paintings reveal a disobedience to the conventional norms proposed by the figurative tradition and demonstrate a deliberate failure in controlling the mass of flesh. This thesis aims at a critical discussion on the dualist premises that lie at the core of figurative tradition in Western art by mainly following the path of Deleuze's examination of Francis Bacon's work. Key words: Figuration, figure, body, representation, vision in
Fotoğrafın ontolojisi üzerine bir inceleme
This study is the culmination of a speculative attempt to understand and restate theenigma of photography. It aims to supplement the thought of photography with a host ofconcepts that seem to have escaped the scope of the theoretical critique of photographyand photographs. In doing so, it follows the lead of the `logic? of the grapheme and ofthe event of history to review the position of photography in relation to the language ofthe logic of being, and investigates whether the time of photography can be held inopposition to `real time.? Consequently, the contexts in which contemporary thought onphotography restrict the identity of photography are problematized, and the peculiaritiesinvolved in the interaction between photographs and viewers are emphasized in thisstudy. Keywords: Photography, Writing, the Real, Specter, Recognition, Iterability, History,Roland Barthes.iii

Doğuyu biçimlendirmek: Ferzan Özpetek filmleri çerçevesinde bir oryantalizm tartışması
This study aims to inaugurate a thorough reading of two films by Ferzan Özpetekthat employ Orient as their setting and major narrative element, Hamam (1997) andHarem Suare (1999), to examine their complicity with the Orientalist practices ofrepresentation. The discussion is informed by just as it responds to some of thecrucial issues within postcolonial theory. Inspired by the deconstructive critique, theintrinsic relation between the Orientalist discourse and the general economy ofWestern subject formation has been elaborated through the analysis of the films. Athree-fold approach has been pursued to be able to diagnose the latent Orientalismsigning the films, since three constitutive moments authorize the attempt of giving astatic form to the Orient. Therefore visual, aural and sexual registers of theOrientalist figuration has been explored. Keywords: Orientalism, Cinema, Ferzan Özpetek, Representation, Deconstruction,Postcolonial Theory.ii
Sıkıntı mekanları: Hayalgücü ve sınırların muğlaklığı
This study aims to contribute readings of arguments pertaining to andconceptualizations of the experience of boredom to discussions of art, philosophyand culture. Relevant histories and readings of philosophical accounts ofboredom are considered in order to enable an understanding of boredom asgenerative of distinctive understandings of space. This is further developed as anaccount of boredom as problematic in the reception and creation of literary andvisual art. Beginning from critical discussions of boredom in recent cultural andcritical commentary, in particular discussions of the everyday, this thesisconsiders the phenomenological analysis of the everyday that is at work inMartin Heidegger?s account of boredom and in rewritings of this analysis, as theexperience of the impersonal, in texts by Maurice Blanchot and EmmanuelLevinas. Boredom is shown to provoke an ambivalence that can neverthelessunfold, or produce, spaces of thought, art and the everyday through theexperience of the impersonal. The limits of these spaces of boredom invite us tocertain passages through experiences of ambivalence where thought, art and theeveryday are opened up, by means of an imagination of boredom, to newpossibilities. Keywords: Boredom, space, ambivalence, limit, imagination.

ABSTRACTA CRYPTONYMY OF CINEMA: A NEW PSYCHOANALYTICALAPPROACH TO THE READING OF FILMSARZU KARADUMANM.A. in Art, Design, and ArchitectureSupervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Mahmut MutmanCo-Supervisor: Instructor Zafer AracagökJuly, 2007This thesis brings a new psychoanalytical approach to cinema studies bycontributing the theory of cryptonymy, which was put forward by thepsychoanalysts Nicholas Abraham and Maria Torok. After an elucidation ofthe theory of the crypt and clarification of the relationship between cryting andcinema writ large, Alfred Hitchcock?s film Rope is presented as an illustrationof the crypt in film theory. The core of the project is composed of threeparadigms for crypting in the analysis of motion pictures: loss, a-topoi, andcipher. Respectively, Pal Sletaune?s film Naboer, Andrei Tarkovsky?s Solarisand Stalker, and lastly Ken McMullen?s Ghost Dance are analyzed with thetheory of the crypt. It is also clearly pointed out that one cannot make ananalysis of the crypt without making a crypt of an analysis. Keywords: Crypt, Crypting, Cryptonymy, Death, Loss, A-topoi, Cipher,Revenance, Mourning, Introjection, Incorporation, Hauntology, Uncanny
This thesis is an analysis of the graphic novel and its film adaptation V for Vendetta in terms of the concepts of framing and deframing. The theoretical framework is mainly derived from the reflections of Pascal Bonitzer, Gilles Deleuze, and Jacques Derrida. It is contended in this study that both the graphic novel and the film V for Vendetta are culturally deframing texts in different ways, and that they trigger the audiences? already present reactions towards certain political frames and framings. As a result, it is argued and exemplified that both of the texts have become one single text, perceived as a ?symbol of resistance? throughout the world.
Gilles Deleuze'ün felsefesinde varlıkbilim problemleri
ABSTRACTPROBLEMS OF ONTOLOGYIN GILLES DELEUZE?S PHILOSOPHYHaydar ÖztürkM.A. in Media and Visual StudiesSupervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Mahmut MutmanJanuary-2008This thesis bases on the examination of Deleuze and Guattari?s some philosophical concepts to argue that existence means connections and we need an ontology of ?and? that is able to reflect this meaning. In this thesis, the relations of things are grasped without introducing ontological hierarchy between them and traditional ontological concepts are introduced in order to refer the problem of connection. In that respect, the concept of machine and its correspondences in their philosophy are read in an ontological context, and some aesthetical and political results of ontology of ?and? are emphasized. Keywords: Machine, Ontology, Difference, Rhizome, ?And?.
İkiliği Kırmak: Beşinci kuşak Çin sinemasına eleştirel bir yaklaşım
How to interpret the self-Orientalized representations in the Fifth Generation Chinese films remains an unresolved problem in cultural and film studies. This thesis underlines some of the major theoretical problems which have produced barriers for critical approaches to and understandings of the Fifth Generation phenomenon in Chinese cinema. By reconsidering the notion of power/knowledge in the Foucauldian sense, this work aims to challenge the assumed ontological relation between China and the West in rigid terms of binary oppositions and find an opening from this closure through which the complex and discursive interactions between the two can be critically examined. In this process of breaking the binaries, we are thus demanded to question the categories of culture, such as high vs. popular culture, art film vs. mass entertainment, etc., which take part in shaping our perceptual habits and interpretive politics.
The use of ultrasound fetal image has become common in medical practice. The ultrasound is a contemporary result of a long medical and technological history, in which the human body and its pathologies are known and controlled by medical apparatus. It is a specific form of image produced by what Michel Foucault called the medical gaze. The thesis offers a genealogy of the ultrasound image and then turns its attention to its contemporary use. By taking the obstetrical examination room as a social context, it shows that what is at stake is not merely technological but actually a social relationship, at the center of which visibility plays a fundamental role. This new power context controls and administers both women?s body and the emergent fetal body, which it perceives as an ?originary human form.? In the culture at large, the fetus is even turned into a citizen with its rights, a metaphor which the anti-abortion movement used and abused extensively. Reading fetology as well as the fetal image in terms of a social relationship of power, it is demonstrated that the woman?s body is treated as mere environment. However, although technology is an important part of this biopolitics, it can also be read as an extension of human body through which the body knows and complicates itself.
This study aims to trace the perspective on media and technology in Jacques Derrida?s thought. For this purpose, a discussion of the notion of inheritance is presented. This notion marks essential themes in Derrida?s approach to modern teletechnologies. Associations between the notion of inheritance and fundamental questions in the thought of deconstruction such as experience, writing and belief are explored. The questions that arise through the contextualization of modern teletechnologies is put forth by a reading of the philosophical dialogue between Bernard Stiegler and Jacques Derrida. It is argued that the experience of bearing witness, to which Derrida ascribes a constitutive role in the formation of the social bond, obtains a new context by the expansion of teletechnologies.

Kendini sökmek: Orlan?ın çalışmalarındaki sonsuz oluşları keşfetmek
This study is an attempt to elaborate on the significance of multimedia and performance artist Orlan?s body and identity altering practices along the lines of Deleuzian theory, to explore the points of overlap and resonances between their projects. It focuses on a range of conceptual resources primarily his formulations together with Guattari on `becoming? to explore the artist?s fluid states of being that is always in the process of transition and her body?s constantly changing nature as a transformative experience. It also includes their theories of `rhizome?, `machinic assemblages? and `body without organs? to provide insights into her ouevre as a form of expanded art practice that enables proliferating connections and collective arrangements, as well as to characterize it as a non-dualistic process that is no longer contingent on binary divisions.
