The role of religion in Iranian foreign policy as a soft power in the Middle East
Middle East lies in a geopolitical area which has gained attraction of the regional and the global powers throughout the history. This region is the connecting bridge between Asia, Europe and Africa, which encompasses different nationalities and religions and till today it has been politically unstable mainly because of direct and indirect religious conflicts. After Islam and its division into two main sub groups by the name of Sunni and Shia, this process continued and till today competition between the two groups Sunnis and Shias has been carried on in the Middle East. Iran Islamic Revolution happened as a remarkable evolution in the Shia-centric community of Iran and after that the leaders of Iran did not focus only in their internal affairs, but rather shifted their concentration on regional politics, particularly through Shia Revolutionists in order to play a considerably active role in the Middle Eastern region. Iran got an active position in the world, especially in the Middle East, after the revolution as a Shia-centric community. Different educational, cultural and political activities of Iran outside its borders are clear examples of Iran's international actions after the revolution. This thesis is based on the research regarding the methods and approachs that Iran has used to expand its borders and influence in the Middle East. It also investigates the elements and factors which Iran has used to have influence over the Middle East. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate and search on foreign politics of Iran and the usage of religion as a soft power in the Middle East. In this essay the religious factors of Iranian politics would be researched and the way it is used. In addition to these, this essay would research about the political and cultural opposition between Iran and other countries in the Middle East. After investigating about the usage of religious factors of Iran in the Middle East, the role of Iran as a regional power and a pro-Shia in the Middle East will be discussed. It will be clarified how Iran has used the Shia factor as a tool in order to reach its political and cultural aims in the Middle East. Comparative analysis of the politics put into practice by Iran and U.S.A in the Middle East region
Relations between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran are influenced by complex historical, geopolitical, and ideological factors. To have a genuine understanding of the relations between the U.S. and Iran requires knowledge of the historical, ideological, and philosophical grounding of the two nations. This report will analyze the history of both the United States and Iran, their geopolitical situation, and the worldview which shapes their foreign policy. Only with this comprehensive level of understanding can American policymakers create a foreign policy towards Iran which is in the national interest of the United States. This report argues that the primary goal of United States foreign policy for the last century is the creation of a liberal world order which respects the rule of law promotes free trade, and respects individual rights. The direction of American foreign policy might be shifting towards a nationalist direction under the leadership of President Trump. Iranian foreign policy is guided by the principle of maintaining its national sovereignty. The primary influence on Iranian philosophical and ideological development is Shia Islam, which serves to re-enforce the independence of Iran from its Sunni neighbors. The tense relationship between the United States and Iran is a product of the Islamic Revolution of 1979, in which a theocratic revolutionary movement overthrew the Shah, an ally of the United States, and took American diplomats hostage. This report recommends a re-examination of Iranian United States relations. The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States share a common interest in suppressing radical Sunni extremist groups such as ISIS, and Iran's willingness to sign the Iran Deal indicates a desire to deal in good faith with the United States. This report recommends a re-examination of the Bush II/Obama era policy of regime change and instead argues that is in the national interest to have a policy towards Iran, and the Middle East, which emphasizes stability rather than ideology.
French policy of Ottoman Syria during the Third Republic Era, 1870-1924
In this thesis, the French policy towards Ottoman Syria during the Third Republic Era between 1870-1924 is analysed. This thesis aims to demonstrate the main characteristics of pre and the post-war expectation of France over Ottoman Syria after the break-out of World War I. This thesis focuses on that the post-war expectations of France related to the Ottoman Empire and province of Syria based on its position as the traditional protector of Christians as well as the large-scale economic investment in the Ottoman Empire, France's mission of bringing civilization to Levant and an attempt to reinstate France's prestige and honour were at stake after the defeat of Franco-Prussian War in 1870 were also played a significant role. This thesis emphasized that, with the establishing of Third Republic, France started colonial expansion under the Third Republic extending to Syria. The argument here is that the Parti Colonial was one of the most crucial elements of the French political system leading to the occupation of Mandate system in Syria. The thesis concludes that there was political and public mass opposition against the French Mandate in Syria between the years 1920-1924.
Sub-imperialism and the Middle East: Saudi Arabia's regional policy in the post-Cold War period
The sub-imperialism theory refers to the policies of a group of dependent capitalist states which are capable of exporting their capital outside of their borders with their relatively independent policy despite of their strong dependence to and domination by core capitalist states. The strong state structure with the support of the merchant class, super-exploitation of migrant workers, "antagonistic alliance" with USA and other developed states, and the intense motivation to expand Saudi influence in the Middle East are all evidences of a state model compatible with the essential features of sub-imperialism theory. Therefore, this thesis scrutinizes the concept of sub-imperialism in order to analyze Saudi Arabia's foreign policy in the Middle East. Regarding that the structure of global capitalism in general and the Middle East as a region in particuar have been subjected to radical changes with the demise of Soviet Union, this thesis specifically concentrates on the Post-Cold War Period. The Saudi actions during the Gulf War, the U.S. invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, the Arab Spring and the Yemeni Civil War as well as the efforts to expand the influence of Saudi conglomerates beyond Saudi and Gulf region reveals a Saudi willingness to expand its sphere of influence more intensely after the end of the Cold War with the help of U.S. unipolarity dominating the Middle East region. Both the expansionist and cooperative attitudes of Saudi Arabia in international politics need to be explained more closely with the sub-imperialism theory's explanations about state behaviour.

The role of Iran in construction of Hezbollah's identity as a non-state actor in the Middle East after the 1979 Islamic revolution
Since its establishment throughout the critical period of Lebanese Civil War (1975- 1990) in the Middle East, Hezbollah has performed as both a powerful player within the Lebanese political system and a key regional non-state actor that received considerable international attention. Hezbollah as a Shi'a militia has a history of numerous struggles with Israel. It carries a strong and enduring alliance with the Iranian regime through its constructed Shi'a revolutionary identity. In fact, there is undeniable importance within the International Relations (IR) discipline in thinking about religious incentives and leadership in shaping the political identity of this nonstate actor's in the Middle East. On the other hand, there are little works to suggest that religious incentives for creating political movements are acting as a systematized and documented instrument of the foreign policy of a state. This is the reason for the current study to scrutinize the complex mechanism that Shi'a Islamic tradition, led by Iranian religious leaders in influencing their sympathizers across the region. This study shows how Iran tries to gain stronger partnership with political movements - in the form of a non-state actor especially Hezbollah - to support its revolutionary agenda against the hegemony of the United States in the Middle East. Despite the fact that religious identity construction through Islamic traditions and teachings are neglected in theorizing in the IR discipline, social constructivism as the theoretical approach is progressively being employed in this study by focusing on formation and exchanges of collective borderless identity phenomena such that could be observed in the construction and expansion of Shi'a revolutionary identity in the Middle East by Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Keywords Iran, Hezbollah, Non-state Actor, Identity, Lebanon, Constructivism, Shi'ism.
İran's foreign policy towards shiite groups in the Middle East: The case of Lebanon and Iraq
This thesis discusses Iran's foreign policy against the Shia groups in the Middle East using Iraq and Lebanon as a base. The study analyzes the post-revolutionary regional dynamics and the Shia strategy of Iran until now. Iran's politics in Iraq, is supported by Hezbollah from Lebanon, Yemen and Bahrain politics have been emerged in the interest of Iran. Moreover, the effect of the Velayat-e Faqih theory in Iranian foreign policy was examined. As a hypothesis, a question emerges; how does Iran affect the states like Iraq and Lebanon while the majority of the people are Shia? As an argument, we can say Iran's political activity in Iraq and Lebanon and the continuation of penetration into the states of the Arab Gulf States such as Bahrain and Yemen in that majority of the people are Shia. On the other hand, Iran's reconciliation of sectarian cultural richness with the concept of the Velayat-e Faqih and imposing it on Shiites as a norm had created a strong state model (vision) for the Shiites in the region. The distinctive factor of the Khomeini revolution was the impressive power that will evoke the existed Shia groups until the time of revolution. After the process of normalization of domestic politics, the revolution could not stay in its own shell and began to spread. Revolutionary principles and the success due to the power of Khomeini gained recognition by Shia groups which are close to Iran. Revolutionary principles have made itself felt in many places, including the Gulf States. Moreover, Iran uses its foreign political tools perfectly. As forementioned, Iran uses political tools such as military, cultural, religious education, social support, finance and other political instruments. The usage of these political tools depends on the geopolitical and strategic position of the Shia groups. For example; In Azerbaijan, Turkey, Kuwait and other countries, religious education is used as a political tool to influence Shiites. However, in countries such as Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq and Bahrain, Iran uses the power management. In addition, Iran has established tremendous intelligence networks in every country where it has political interest. On the other hand, the Supreme Leader has appointed representatives to the areas where Shiites live. Keywords: Shi' ism, Iranian Shiites, Velayat-e Faqih, Iraqi Shia groups, Lebanese Shia groups
Changing USA's foreign policies in the Middle East region
Today the terms called "Near East" and "Middle East" have come to be used interchangeably, but generally the term with Middle East ; considered to states consist of the independent countries of Turkey, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, Kuwait, and lying along the coast of Arabian Peninsula. And this area, for American policymakers has often been a headache, sometimes a nightmare, and each president has applied his own policy for the Middle East from Truman to Bush. The United States has five fundamental interest in the Middle east: Oil of the region, especially the Arabian peninsula; The survival and security of the state of Israel; Preventing the other powers from dominating the area; Preventing, or at least managing, the spread of WMD and the fulfillment, so far as possible, of certain principles, including the peaceful settlement of international disputes, the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by force, and the right of peoples to self-determination. Each one of these interest, taken alone, gives the United States a vital concern with the future of the Middle East; taken together, and considering as well the extreme volatility of the unresolved Arab-Israel conflict, they make the Middle East the most important single region in the world from the standpoint of American interest- and the most dangerous. This thesis has sought to understand the complex and, at times, bewildering policy of USA on the Middle East, in particular, towards the policy of Israel, oil and The Gulf War. XVIII
Filistin'de ikinci intifada; Sosyal, ekonomik, siyasi, askeri, güvenlikle ilgili sonuçlar 2000-2005
Palestine is an Arab country located in the heart of the Middle East, which links West Asia and North Africa. It is one of the countries that had embraced many civilizations and had been a cradle for various religions during the course of the history. Therefore, Palestine is endowed with an important location and characterized by the beautiful nature and atmosphere of the Mediterranean Sea. These characteristics have always made it an attraction center for occupation forces with an aspiration to control the country. This study dwells upon domestic development of Palestine and particularly the ramifications of the case known as the Second Intifada between 2000 and 2005 in terms of economy, society, politics and military. Due to its nature of complications causing a substantive effect on the Palestinian society, the Second Intifada addresses in this study bears great importance. The study further touches upon the decline of Palestinians' morale during the Second Intifada due to being subject to psychological pressure which caused nervousness. In this regard, the history of the second Intifada in Palestine is a case that cannot bear indifference since it is also a part of the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis. This study sheds light on the compelling humanitarian situation as well as devastated economy in Gaza and West Bank during the Second Intifada showing the severe death toll for Palestinians particularly in Gaza and West Bank. In this context, the study examines the Second Intifada in-dept and focuses on how this incident affected politics towards the Palestinians residing in the region. Nonetheless, the failure of negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis during the Second Intifada led Palestinians to give up hope for their political rights. Moreover, Israeli military oppression on Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza has increased along with repression, which has led to serious security concerns. In the light of these developments, the study elaborates on the severe effects imposed by the Second Intifada on the Israeli political reality in terms of social, economic, military and other aspects of life. In addition, the main reasons for Israeli withdrawal from Gaza Strip in September 2005 is also explored in the study as well as its political, economic and security-related implications. Thus, this study is essentially developed within the framework of monitoring and analyzing the political, military and economic implications of the withdrawal. In this thesis, the Second Intifada (uprising) in Palestine and its social, economic, political, military and security effects between the years 2000 and 2005 and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005 will be explained in detail under the framework of two hypotheses. My hypotheses are: 1- Along with the increase of violence, Israel's campaign of revenge against civilians is also incrementing and 2-Violence by the Israeli occupation forces against civilians can be referred to a negative effect on high morals during the Second Intifada and the Withdrawal. Furthermore, the following questions are targeted to be answered: What are social, economic, political, military and security effects of the Second Intifada as well as the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005 in local and global scale? Keywords: Palestine, West Bank, Gaza, Israel, Hamas, Fatah, Intifada, Withdrawal
The nature of the Baghdad Pact and Turkey's Middle East policy
This descriptive dissertation is an attempt to analyze the establishment and the structure of the Baghdad Pact (1955) as a Western effort to contain Soviet expansionism in the Middle East in the critical after-War years until the end of the first decade of the Cold War with careful consideration of Turkish foreign policy towards the Middle East. As the Second World War drew to a close, Turkey's traditional security deficit from the USSR resurrected. While bipolarity was taking shape, Turkey's security considerations overlapped with those of the West. Turkey's alignment with the West was complete with NATO membership in 1952 but was conditional on her participation in Western defense schemes for the region. The subsequent Baghdad Pact was a "Northern Tier" initiative under the tutelage of the US. This research investigates the goals of the Baghdad Pact, its enlargement and its eventual collapse with a view of its weaknesses, the reasons for hostility from non-members as well as the emerging struggle for the Middle East between the superpowers. Turkey as a co-founding member of the Baghdad Pact aimed to be pro-active in the region to enhance her importance to the West. However, she in the end remained alienated in the Middle East as the Pact changed into a weapon that backfired on its own members. The USSR gained a competitive edge, penetrated deeper into the region through exploitation of "anti-imperialism" and "peaceful coexistence" and contributed to its radicalization. Western effort on the other hand was not able to respond to the rapidly changing structure of the elusive politics of the Middle East during the time frame in consideration.
Cold war in the Middle East: soviet interests in the middle east and the american effect
As a geographically and geo-strategically important oil-rich region, the Middle East witnessed the interest clashes of the great powers from the early times. The Soviet Union and the United States kept their everlasting rivalry going in the Middle East during the Cold War. The Soviet, as a continuation of its centuries old interests, maintained its influence in the Middle East, while endeavouring the containment policy of United States as the most powerful rival in this regard. Both superpowers, engaged in various alliances and wars, directly or indirectly, within the framework of such concepts as ideology, arms sales, energy politics and open market. Most of the alliances in the region were formed on the basis of military and economic assistance and political support. While the Soviet Union preserved its sphere of influence by means of anti-capitalism and Arab nationalism in the region, the United States took its part as the sole guarantor of the State of Israel and an ally of oil rich pro-Western dictatorships. In this regard, the Arab-Israel wars laid the basis for this superpower interest conflicts. As a result of the political polarization, the Soviet Union supported the Arabs, and the United States remains on the side of Israel, in order to preserve and expand their influence in the region. Cold War rivalry in the Middle East came to an end with partial peace between the Arabs and Israel, witnessing the United States as the winner of the rivalry, and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Rising from its ashes, the newly established Russian Federation, after a short period of stagnation, continued its old interests with new perspectives to become an influential power within the region and in the world, however this time facing a more proponent United States. Turkey as a role model for the Arab awakening in The Middle East
Since the beginning of the Arab Spring, whether or not the "Turkish Model" will be the best democratic model for the countries in the Middle East has become one of the crucial discussion issues. However, it has caused misperceptions because of the misinterpretation of the model. The study claims that the full application of the "Turkish Model" to Middle Eastern countries is not possible due to cultural and political differences, however, despite these differences, the "Turkish Model" is a good alternative for several areas such as the state-religion relations, economic development and advanced democracy. In the first part of the thesis, general international theories that form the basis for understanding Turkish Foreign Policy are introduced. In this respect, firstly classical international theories of Alexander Wendt and Kenneth Waltz are analyzed and then, Turkish Arab relations both in the Ottoman and Turkish Republic era are examined. In the second part of the thesis, global, regional, social, economical, political, cultural and religious issues that provoked Arab Awakening in various Arab countries are introduced. The third part of the thesis focuses on the global and regional effects of the Arab Spring in Egypt and particularly in Syria. Furthermore, the main part of the thesis examines the global, regional and local analyses which affect the Arab Spring. This thesis is supported in the last part of the thesis which compares both advantages and disadvantages of the Arab Spring for Turkey. In this respect, it is obvious that the reasons which provoked the Arab Spring must be analyzed in details. This thesis includes important analyses of academic studies in this field.
Influence of the Congress on the American foreign policy in the Middle East since the turn of the century
The region which is referred as the Middle East, involves Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Yemen, Kuwait, U.A.E., Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other independent states in the Arab Peninsula. This large region has always been one of the centers of interest in the world due to its strategic importance and rich oil resources. For United States, there is one more reason for the importance given to this area. Middle East plays a crucial role for security and safety of U.S.A.'s primary ally, Israel. Additionally to these primary factors; this area has been given particular attention; especially for the purpose of; preventing other powers from capturing the area; avoiding, or at least, managing the spread of weapons of mass destruction; preserving the borders against any act of power, as well as solution of international disputes by peaceful mediums and the right of self-determination. When all these facts and reasons are taken into consideration as a whole big picture; the importance of the region for the United States can be seen more clearly. This study primarily involves the foreign policy of United States, which has been applied on the Middle East (particularly Iraq and Israel) especially during two consecutive presidency periods of George W. Bush. Additionally, the opposition between the president and the congress is analyzed by also evaluating similar problems which have been witnessed during the times of former presidents. We may assert in advance that, the history of United States has always witnessed problems between the president and the congress involving the authority to exercise power.Additionally, this study intends to indicate and evaluate the effects of the decisions given by the congress or the president as the actors of U.S.A.'s international policy involving Middle East in 21st century. Which methods did the U.S.A. use for its own benefit, was there any dispute between the president and the congress during the application of these policies? If yes, what were the results of this aforesaid dispute? These questions are all tried to be answered under the scope of the study.KEY WORDS: Middle East, USA, International Policy of USA.
I. Körfez Savaşı'nın Türk dış politikasına etkisi
II. Abdülhamid'in islamcılık siyasetinin Ortadoğu'da uygulanması
Çalışmada; II. Abdülhamid'in (1876-1909) Ortadoğu'da uyguladığı İslamcılık siyasetini Ortadoğu Müslümanlarına ve Düvel-i Muazzama'ya etkileri ve sonuçları üzerinden değerlendirmek amaçlanmıştır. II. Çalışmanın yazım sürecinde kaynaklar incelenip okunup not alınarak yazıma uygun görülmüştür. Düvel-i Muazzama'nın değişen politikalarıyla birlikte II. II. Abdülhamid'in yapmış olduğu faaliyetler ve halifeliğin dünya Müslümanları üzerindeki etkisinin Düvel-i Muazzama tarafından halifeliğin papalık konumuna benzer bir duruma gelmesine yol açtığı kaydedilmiş arşiv belgeleri, hatıratlar ve önceden hazırlanmış çeşitli eserler sayesinde ortaya çıkarılmaktadır. Osmanlı Devleti'nin artık yıkılmasını arzulayan Düvel-i Muazzama'nın İslamcı siyasetle yeri geldiğinde manevra kabiliyeti yavaşlasa da Müslümanların birlik olmasını sömürgelerini ve egemenliğini kaybetmemek amacıyla daima engellemeye çalışarak Ortadoğu'da İslamcı siyasetin uzun soluklu olarak uygulanmasını engellediği görülmüştür. Anahtar Kelimeler: İslamcılık, Ortadoğu, Halifelik, II. Abdülhamid, Düvel-i Muazzama.
The analysis of Turkish foreign policy towards the Palestinian issue in the jdp era within the context of constructivism and post-structuralism
This thesis uses theories of constructivism and post-structuralism to analyze the Turkish foreign policy towards the Palestinian issue. Main assumption of this thesis is that discourse about the Palestinian issue is linked to the changes of identities of Turkish governments and principles of Turkish foreign policy toward the Middle East. At the same time, the discourse is a factor that assigns new identities and reproduces existing identities, in addition to its function in producing shared knowledge, social relations and making other actions possible. It is assumed that in the early years of the Turkish Republic, the discourse about the Palestinian issue was weak, and the dominant discourse or master signifier of the Turkish foreign policy was Westernization linked with negative perceptions about Arabs. However, there has been a radical shift about Turkey's sensitivities and affiliations to the Middle East during JDP era. Accordingly, the discourse about Arabs started to change from negative to positive, with domination of pro-Palestinian discourse. First, nodal points of Turkish foreign policy towards the Middle East in each era will be examined using Laclau and Mouffe's logic of equivalence and difference, then their theory of hegemon discourse and antagonism will be used to show that before JDP era, discourses about Israel and the Palestinian issue collided due to the existence of two opposing identities which are Western identity and Islamic identity. While in JDP era this antagonism in discourses dissolved through hegemonic interventions of pro-Islamic and Middle Eastern identity.
