Abstract (EN)
Textbooks are among the most important instruments for teaching and instruction and they are the most basic resource for both teachers and students. Therefore, the content, the design, the usability, and the visual quality of textbooks receive considerable attention. Considered as the main guidance in learning, textbooks have been subject to much research. In this study, we surveyed the opinions of Turkish Literature teachers who teach at public high schools in Bagcilar district of Istanbul on the tenth grade textbook. Ninety one Turkish Literature teachers participated in the study. We used "Survey on the functionality of the tenth grade Turkish Literature textbook and its conformity to the national curriculum " as the tool of data collection. The data collected is analyzed using the SPSS software via Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis for independent groups. Moreover, an item analysis is conducted on each of the 16 items. The results show that while the tenth grade Turkish Literature textbook is considered to be adequate for meeting the national curriculum goals by the Ministry of Education, there are important points to be addressed in terms of its content. Shortcomings of the textbook are observed in terms of the quality, the practicality, and the diversity of the activities in it. Additionally, a lack of congruence between the content of the textbook and the questions on the OSYM test has been concluded. We also observed that the gender, the program a teacher graduated from or the seniority in the career did not make a significant difference in teachers' opinions. We also explain the historical development of teaching Turkish Literature, and analyze the current Turkish Literature curriculum. Additionally we discuss the methods and the techniques in teaching literature, and various approaches to presenting the topic by different resources.
