Reflections of the coup of May 27, 1960 in the Press

After the transition to multi-party political life in Turkey, the first election experience took place on 21 July 1946. CHP, which is the only party of the Republic of Turkey and has ruled the country since the establishment of the country, was successful after the 1946 election and remained in power. The DP, which was founded on January 7, 1946, found significant support from the public in these elections, which it entered six months after its establishment, and undertook the duty of opposition as the second party. In the 14 May 1950 elections, the DP, which received wide popular support, emerged as the first party in these elections and ended the quarter-century-long rule of the CHP. The May 27, 1960 Military Intervention, which took place after 10 years of DP rule, disrupted democracy and left deep traces on the future of the country. The DP administration was handed over from power. So much so that the process was not limited to this, politicians belonging to the DP were arrested and sentenced to prison life. Adnan Menderes, Fatin Rüştü Zorlu and Hasan Polatkan, on the other hand, were put on the execution bench and paid for their justified political gains with their lives. During the May 27, 1960 Coup, the Turkish press displayed a stance in favor of the coup. The putschists received great support and attention from the press. In the news in newspapers and magazines, the coup and coup plotters were praised, and the movement was adopted as a liberation movement. In order to justify the coup, the press dedicated various crimes against the administrators of the DP.
