The effects of the incidents of 6/7 September 1955 on Turkey Greeks: 1955-1959

Following the great success recorded in the 1950 elections, with the Democratic Party's coming to power, the positive effects of liberal policies imposed in domestic politics and foreign relations clearly emerged. The Democratic Party, also supported by the minority citizens in the young republic, led to prevailing air of freedom in the country with a variety of applications. However, along with Greece's view change on the island of Cyprus, and depending on the supports of organization EOKA for terrorist actions, Turkish-Greek relations steadily deteriorated. Accordingly, the lives of Greek Minority in Turkey were experienced the same tight processes as from 1955.In August of 1955, London Conference, also attended by Turkey and Greece at the invitation of Britain, led to effects which were very difficult to repair in the relations of two countries and the lives of the Greek minority in Turkey. On the other hand this, along with an international dimension on the Cyprus issue, has developed into a new problem that will place many years in Turkey's foreign policy agenda.The news of bombing to Atatürk's house in Salonika led to thousands of people chanting slogans and protesting the event, which also caused breaking the London conference. In spite of peacefully starting, after a short time, owing to the inducement of some groups, the crowd attempted an act of destruction and looting of estates in Istanbul Beyoğlu, Osmanbey, Kurtuluş, Şişli and island districts and the home, workplace, church, shops, sacred spring, production workshop, etc belonging to the Greek minority living in İzmir.These destruction events that has not seen before in Turkish history have had very heavy results on Greeks living in Turkey. Above all, they got alienated from the society they live in and they felt the need to act more cautiously in the relationships they establish both with the state and the Muslim citizens.Turkish Greeks have started to migrate from Turkey to other western countries, particularly Greece since the outbreak of events 1955; although the actual migrations were in tense in 1964. Because of Turkey's termination of the treaty of trade, residence and Seyrisefain signed with Greece, tens thousands of Greek origin resulted in abandonment of Turkey. Settlement of the Cyprus problem with the Treaties of London and Zurich, signed as a result of bilateral negotiations between Greece and Turkey, re-enabled the prevailing air of peace and cooperation between the tw ocountries.
