Abstract (EN)

The aim of this research is, during 2012-2013 academic year, to define the relationship between 8th grade students' behaviours of self-respect and their attitude towards social media tools. As the result of the research, the positive and negative effects of the subjects' attitude when using social media tools and self respect is discussed. In this research relationally scanning model is used. The population of the research is the 8th grade students who are attending to elementary schools in Beykoz county of Istanbul provenance, during 2012-2013 academic year of education. The sample of the research has been chosen as set sampling among the elementary schools that are in Beykoz. Samples represent 577 8th grade students who are actively being educated in 11 schools affiliated to Ministry of Education of Turkish Republic in Beykoz county of Istanbul provenance. In the research, "Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale" which was created by Piers and Harris in 1976, USA, and was adapted to Turkish language in 1987 by Necla Öner and Melike Çataktı from Boğaziçi University, was used to scale the subjects' self respect. "Social Media Behavior Scale", which was developed by Mustafa Otrar and Ferhat Argın in 2013, was used in order to scale the subjects' behaviors towards media tools and "Pesonal Information Form", which was created by the researcher, to understand students' demographical situations was also used. While extracting conclusions from the research, SPSS pack program (SPSS 15.0.0) was used to make statistical analysis. To evaluate the research findings, Descriptive Analysis Methods were used (Frequency (f), Percentage (%), Medium (X) and Standard Deviation (s). Extracted data was tested with t-test and single factor variance (One - Way ANOVA) and Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to understand the involvement of analysis techniques and scaling instruments. The results are conducted with 95% confidence bounds, meaningfulness at a level of p<.05 is determined and evaluated in dual way. It was determined that there is not a significant relationship between sub-dimensions of PHBSÖ happiness-satisfaction, worry, behavior and compliance/conformity and SMTÖ total scores and on the other side there are negative meaningful relationships between subdimensions of PHBSÖ popularity/social appreciation, being reviewed; physical appearance intellectual and school status and SMTÖ total scores. On the other hand it was determined that scale scores differ significantly according to some demographic variables. Finally, various suggestions are made in the context of the findings. Keywords: Social Media, Social Networks, Self Esteem, Adolescent
