Investigated burnout in anesthesia and intensive care medicine physician in and around Adana

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess levels of burnout at anesthesia and intensive care physicians in and around Adana.Materials and methods: Anesthesia and intensive care specialists were working at anesthesia, reanimation and algology units the 2. and 3. Step health care facilities in and around Adana and at Çukurova University 1-year long expertise in anesthesia and intensive care physicians in this area were trained as research assistants were included in this study after ministry approval of the board of ethics and the written consent of pyhsicians were taken. Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) investigate emotional exhaustion depersonalization personel succes. The personal characteristics, habits, and working conditions, and investigating the socio-demographic datacollection form prepare with MBI and obtained informed consent form were delivered to 88 physicians were analyzed. SPSS 18.0 package program was used for statistical analysis of the data. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for the measurements at comparing between two groups of anormal distribution of numerical data Kruskal-Wallis test was used for general comparing anormal distribution of quantitative measurements of more than two groups. In all tests, statistical significance level was took at 0.05.Findings: 36.4% (n=32) male; 63.6% (n=56) female of anhesthesia doctor who participate in survey. Average of groups is 36.9±5.7. 67% of participants (n=59) has at least a hobby. 18% of physicians has a chronic illness and 69% of physicians has no a chronic illness. Participating anesthesiologists were evaluated according to age groups; MBI-EE (emotional exhaustion) score the highest (20.09±6.38), the highest MBI-D (depersonalization) score (7.64±3.64) and the highest MBI-NW score (11.50±2.68) at 25 to 30 age group. 88 anesthetis were enrolled, of whom 68.2% (n=60) were specialist doctors and 30.7% (n=27) were research assitants. Statistically significant difference was meaning and values of p respectively 0.001, 0.001 ve 0.002 in scores for each of the three sub-category of physician assistant. Rates of 34.1% of the state hospital (n=30) 26.1% of private hospitals (n=23) and the university hospital of 35.2% (n=31) to be close to each other. 9.8% of doctors? (n=35) did not work at intensive care unit on the other hand 45.5% of doctors (n=40) worked at reanimation unit. Data were taken from variables were realeted with speciality year, occupational year, weekly working time, monthly watch duration, monthly earning of anesthetics and this data respectivly 6±4.8 years, 57.2±23.3 hours, 6.4±5.4 and 4730±2240.9 TL. Finally the means values was obtained. The participants scale scores of MBI were calculated acording to MBI subscales (EE-D-AA). The average MBI-EE score 15:57±6.11; MBI-D score 5.35±3:08 and MBI-AA score 9.26±3.41was determine.Result: Burnout subscale scores of personal success at participates of anesthesia physicians in this study were obtained the findings as a positive directione by statistical analysis. The high rate of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization are experienced, altough physicians feel themselves successful. Regulation of working conditions, concentrating on education, psychological support and organizational arrangements can suggest as a solutions for Burnout.Key words: Anesthesia and intensive care physicians, Burnout syndrome, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Adana and its environs
