Investigation of the Effectiveness of Education Given to Mothers about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Safe Sleep Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the education given to mothers about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and safe sleep. Methods: This study is a quasi-experimental research with a one group pretest post-test design. The study was conducted with 207 mothers who brought their 0-1 month old babies to the newborn polyclinic at İzmir University of Health Sciences Tepecik Training and Research Hospital located in the borders of İzmir's central district between August 2018 and February 2019. All those 207 mothers who reached within the duration of the study were given education on the subject and following the education the study was concluded with 141 mothers. For data collection "Mother-Infant Sociodemographic Characteristics and Risk Factors Diagnosis Form" and " Mother's Knowledgaebility on Prevention Against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Safe Sleeping Practices Assessment Form" were used. Before beginning the study, the mothers were asked to fill the "Mother-Infant Sociodemographic Characteristics and Risk Factors Diagnosis Form" and the "Mother's Knowledgaebility on Prevention Against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Safe Sleeping Practices Assessment Form". The mothers were given education the subject via a 10-15 minute long Powerpoint presentation by the researcher and then they were shown a 5 minute long video which was shot by the researcher for education purposes. Subsequently, they were asked to fill the "Mother's Knowledgaebility on Prevention Against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Safe Sleeping Practices Assessment Form" and "Protection from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Safe Sleep Education Booklet" is provided in order to help them reinforce their information at home. One month after education the mothers who were subjected to education and returned for their follow up appointment at the polyclinic were asked to fill the "Mother's Knowledgaebility on Prevention Against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Safe Sleeping Practices Assessment Form" again. Results: The age of the mothers who were part of the study is 28.45±5.9. It has been determined that 37.2 % of the mothers only finished elementary school, 87.4 % of them are housewives and 73.9 % of them live in nuclear families. 59.9 % of the babies are male. It has been found out that of the mothers subjected to the study 94.7 % breastfed their babies, 51.7 % put them to bed on side sleep position, 35.7 % slept in the same bed, 57.5 % used a pillow when putting them to bed, 28.0 % covered their babies' faces in bed, 37.7 % used a pacifier, 21.7 % smoked during pregnancy, 48.3 % didn't know the temperature of the room where their baby slept. It has also been determined that the education level, income, occupation, social security status and family type of the mothers affected their attitudes towards SIDS risk factors and safe sleep (p<0.05). While the average score of the mothers before the education was 5.65±1.85, immediately after the training their average score became 9.89±0.33 and 1 month later it was reported as 8.95±1.07. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of mothers before, immediately after and 1 month after the education. Conclusion: As a result of this study, it has been concluded that the training provided to the mothers on SIDS and safe sleeping practices was effective.
