Comparison of depression, anxiety and somatization test results with vestibular test findings in adults who applied with dizziness complains

Because of the evidential relationship between psychological emotional states and vertigo, in our study, it was aimed to compare the findings of depression, anxiety and somatization test results with vestibular test findings in adults who applied with vertigo complaints. 60 patients with vertigo, between 18-65 years of age, 18 patients (30%) male, 42 patients (70%) female included our study. Videonistagmography (VNG), Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) and Vestibulospinal tests were applied to all patients. 30 person who applied with dizziness complaints and gets at least one positive results from these vestibular tests were included group I, 30 person who applied with dizziness complaints and gets normal test findings from all vestibular tests were included group II. All individuals were asked to complete Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAE) and Somatization (SOM) which is subscale of SCL-90. Results from these tests (BDI, BAE, SOM) were compared with vestibular test results and DHI. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of depression, anxiety and somatization (p<0.05). It was found that in group II, dizziness disability level was higher than group I (p<0.05).There was a significant relationship between the dizziness disability level and depression and anxiety in both groups (p<0.05). As a result; the addition of the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) to the evaluation battery is needed. Beside, It may be useful to use patients's depression and anxiety scales before seeking a psychogenic cause underlying dizziness in individuals with dizziness and normal vestibular test findings.
