Abstract (EN)

This thesis aims to analyze and compare Bertolt Brecht's Man Equals Man and Haldun Taner's The Shadow of the Donkey through the character element within the framework of epic theater. It is anticipated that such a comparison will offer a valuable analytical lens to explore how social criticism is conveyed through epic theatrical techniques. Within this context, the study further seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the characters' societal roles and the messages they convey to the audience. Both Brecht and Taner are regarded as prominent playwrights of the 20th century. By placing social criticism at the core of their work, they addressed the sociopolitical structures of their respective periods. Their plays reflect keen observations on the impacts of war, societal transformation, and the evolution of individual identity. Through these observations, they critically engaged with the social dynamics of their time and explored how individuals interact with the society they inhabit. This study will thus offer an in-depth examination of how Brecht and Taner constructed their characters as vehicles of social critique, and how these characters embody and reflect processes of societal transformation.
