Cognitive poetry: Classical and contemporary poetry applications

This study aims to examine literary experience within the framework of Cognitive Poetry Theory (Cognitive Poetics), which seeks to explain it through cognitive orientations and constraints. The theory is an interdisciplinary approach that applies the tools offered by cognitive science to literary analysis. In this context, it investigates the manifestations in poetry of the processes of information processing, organization, and transmission in cognition, using the theoretical and empirical possibilities offered by relevant disciplines, including psychology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, philosophy, and subfields of linguistics. The theory argues that poetry is not only a means of narration and transmission but also a structural formation shaped by cognitive constraints and directives, and it seeks to understand how these formations interact with the reader's emotional responses and how meaning and poetic experience emerge. Cognitive Poetry Theory, classification (categorization), use of metaphor, representation (deixis), as well as psychological/cognitive mechanisms such as simulation, association, schema, and Gestalt principles, in the production of multi-layered meaning in poetry. The theory argues that language, cognition, and emotional processes are active in meaning formation, while also suggesting that these mechanisms are part of everyday life/processes and focuses on the transformation of these mechanisms, actively used for survival, in terms of aesthetic impact and responses in poetry. These cognitive mechanisms, which interact with memory, perception, attention, and logical processes during the reception and formation of poetry, are important in showing how the concept of interpretation emerges along with meaning. Based on these principles, while the main framework of the study is linguistics, the possible effects of cognition and emotion processes on meaning formation in poetry are systematically addressed throughout the thesis. The study also aims to ground explanations about poetry on a scientific basis by providing empirical evidence for intuitive poetry criticism and analysis.
