The tafsir Narrations of Jabir bin Abdullah

The contribution of the Companions to the understanding of the Qur'an is of great significance, as they were the first recipients of divine revelation. Among this pioneering generation, Jâbir b. Abd Allâh stands out not only for his role in ḥadîth and jurisprudence but also for his noteworthy engagement in Qur'anic exegesis. The reports attributed to him concerning the interpretation of Qur'anic verses provide valuable insights into the formative stages of tafsîr. This study identifies and examines the exegetical reports transmitted from Jâbir b. Abd Allâh, focusing particularly on those preserved in reliable classical sources. Special attention has been given to reports containing asbâb al-nuzûl information as well as those considered weak. The analysis demonstrates that Jâbir's exegetical activity reflects the essential characteristics of Companion exegesis while also containing individual interpretations and distinctive contributions. Thus, this study aims both to determine Jâbir b. Abd Allâh's place within the tafsīr tradition and to contribute to a deeper understanding of the structure and diversity of early Companion exegesis.
