Abstract (EN)

The synthetic antioxidants used in food production and protection lead to various metabolic diseases such as cancer. Nowadays, there is an increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Assays are devoted to explore new drugs to struggle with these diseases. Although synthetic drugs are more effective than that of herbal remedies, they are expensive, have toxic effects and can cause resistance against microorganisms. Therefore, herbal remedies have attracted considerable attention. Herbal remedies are used both in curing with synthetic drugs and alone in alternative medicine. It is believed that leaves, cones and resins of Cedrus libani and Abies cilicia, have medicinal effects. Hence, they are used for treatment of various diseases in tradiational medicine. For this purpose, in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Cedrus libani and Abies cilicia resins were investigated.Crude extracts, methanol extracts and hexane extracts and all fractions were fractioned from methanol extracts (SFr1, SFr2, SFr3, SFr4, SFr5, KFr1, KFr2, KFr3, KFr4, and KFr5) of Cedrus libani and Abies cilicia were analysed for their total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Gallic acid and guercetine were used as standard phenolics. The highest contents of phenolics were observed for SFr2 (315.51 ± 13.36 µg GAE/mg resine), and Abies (crude extract) (56.52 ± 4.60 µg GAE/mg resine) and the highest contents of flavonoids were observed for SFr5 (4.47 ± 0.07 µg QUE/mg resine) and KFr5 (2.87 ± 0.03 µg QUE/mg resine).Methanol extracts, and SFr2, SFr3,SFr4, SFr5, KFr5 fractions were investigated for their antioxidant activity, in vitro, by using tree different antioxidant assays such as 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH.) free radical scavenging activity, metal chelating activity and reducing power. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) were used as standard antioxidants and EDTA was used as standard metal chelator. SFr2 was showed the highest reducing power, and DPPH radical scavenging activity ((% 92.10 ± 3.78). On the other hand, the metal chelating activity for all test samples were not evaluated, except Abies (methanol extract), KFr5, SFr4 and SFr5. In this assay, the highest metal chelating activity was observed for KFr5 (% 63.06 ± 0.78).The antimicrobial activity of crude extracts, methanol extracts and hexane extracts and all fractions that were fractioned from methanol extracts (SFr1, SFr2, SFr3, SFr4, SFr5, SFr6, KFr1, KFr2, KFr3, KFr4 and KFr5) of Cedrus libani and Abies cilicia was tested by paper disc diffusion method. Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Streptococcus pyogenes, and yeast fungus Candida albicans clinical isolate were used as a standart strain. Imipenem, Ofloksasin, Netilmisin, Amoxycillin, and Amfoterisin B antibiotics were used as a standart antibiotics. Resin samples (40, 60 and 80 µg/paper disc) were showed 8-16 mm inhibition zones against standard microorganisms growth. Keywords: Cedrus libani, Abies cilicia, Antioxidant activity, Antimicrobial activity
