Effect of various anesthetics on the oxytocin levels in the brain and the heart

Oxytocin is not only related to motherhood and birth, but also it has an important impact on different areas of body, different systems. This study investigated ketamin, propofol and fentanyl which are widespread used all around the world and we aimed to show effect of those effects on brain and heart. This study was made by using 24 rats in Namık Kemal University experimental animals laboratory. The rats which are used in the study had between 250-300 gr weight and they were Spraque Dawley. Those rats were separated ın 4 groups which are called control, ketamine, propofol, and fentanyl groups and an effective dose (75 mg/ kg for ketamin, 0.2-0.5 ml/kg, for fentany, l,2 mg/kg for propofol) was applicated those groups and had been waited for 10 minutes and sacrified. The samples which are taken from rats were sent to the laboratory and examined. According to the results, there are nosignificant differences between the group of ketamine and control. But the fentanyl group were showed a significant increased oxytocin level for heart when compared to the control group (P=0,024). Comparing the group of propofol and control group's heart oxytocin level was higher than control group significantly (P=0,000) and also group of propofol oxytocin/protein level showed significant differences compared to the group of ketamine (P=0,000) and control (P=0,004). The results which emerge by this study could help different experimental animal models and human research studies to understand more clearly the effect of these anesthetics on cardiovascular and brain oxytocin systems.
