Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT Determination of Antibiotic Susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus Strains Introduction and Aim: Staphylococcus aureus causes infections with high morbitide and mortality such as bacteremia, pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis, toxic shock syndrome and osteomyelitis. The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of S. aureus strains isolated from various clinical specimens. Material and Methods: 264 S. aureus strains which isolated from various clinical specimens came to Microbiology Laboratory of Erzincan University Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital were taken to the study, between January 2015 and December 2016. Conventional methods (Gram stain, catalase and coagulase test) and VITEK 2 automated system (bioMérieux, France) were used for bacterial identification and to determine antibiotic susceptibility. Antibiotic susceptibility of strains was evaluated according to EUCAST criteria. Results: 61,36% of S. aureus strains were isolated from hospitalized patients and 38,64% were isolated from polyclinic patients. The isolates were obtained from samples of 64 tracheal aspirate, 55 blood, 44 wound, 44 urine, 29 nose, 28 other (ear, catheter, sterile body fluid, etc.). In the S. aureus strains, 69 (26.14%) were identified as MRSA and 195 (73.86%) as MSSA. Vancomycin, teicoplanin, linezolid, tigecycline and daptomycin were found to be the most effective antibiotics when antibiotic susceptibilities of these strains were examined. The highest resistance rate was detected against penicillin. Conclusion: The rate of MRSA detected in our study was high. Vancomycin, teicoplanin, linezolid, tigecycline and daptomycin are the most effective antibiotics to S. aureus. Along with the introduction of national data, all centers should identify their own resistance profile to set appropriate antibiotic policies and up-to-date information on prophylactic treatments.
