Abstract (EN)

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of frailty syndrome among community dwelling older adults, to identify the sociodemographic, clinical, and lifestyle factors affecting frailty, and to evaluate their reflections on overall health status. Based on these findings, it was intended to contribute to the strengthening of early diagnosis, risk assessment, and holistic care approaches to prevent the development of frailty, as well as to promote the development of preventive strategies in family medicine practices and to increase awareness of healthy aging. The study data were collected between December 1, 2024, and May 31, 2025, through a questionnaire administered to 403 volunteers who met the inclusion criteria and applied to 23 Family Health Centers and their 52 affiliated units in the central district of Edirne. The questionnaire included items on sociodemographic characteristics (age, marital status, education, income, living arrangement), health behaviors (smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index), presence of chronic diseases and medication use, history of falls and hospitalizations, and the FRAIL Scale (Fatigue, Resistance, Ambulation, Illnessess, Loss of Weight), aiming to determine the frailty levels of individuals. The study revealed that women, widowed or divorced individuals, illiterate participants, those with lower income than expenses, those living alone, individuals with higher body mass index, multiple chronic diseases, and polypharmacy, as well as those with a history of falls or hospitalizations in the past year, were at higher risk for frailty. In contrast, no significant association was found between frailty and employment status, smoking, or alcohol use. In light of these findings, early identification of frailty, reduction of risk factors, and planning of appropriate interventions among older adults are of great importance. Therefore, integrating frailty assessment into routine primary care practices and developing preventive public health policies to raise awareness about frailty may provide significant contributions to promoting healthy aging.
