Examination of the relationship between the bullying in adolescents, internet addiction and levels of emotional intelligence

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationships between adolescent' peer bullying tendencies, internet addictions and levels of emotional intelligence. The universe of the research consists of adolescents studying in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades of high school level schools located in Şehitkamil district of Gaziantep province in 2016-2017 education year. The sample of the study consists of a total of 409 students, 191 girls and 218 boys, selected by simple random sampling method at each high school level in Şehitkamil district of Gaziantep province. Analysis of the data obtained in the study was performed using the SPSS 22.0 package program. Apart from, Spearman Rank Difference Correlation analysis, independent t-test and one-way factor analysis (One-Way Anova) were applied.The Mann-Whitney U Test was applied to two samples without an association, and the Kruskal Wallis Test was applied to three or more sample groups. As a result of analysis of research data; while the adolescents' tendency to peer bullying differed significantly in terms of gender, maternal employment status, school type and class levels but there was no significant difference in education level of mother and father. Emotional intelligence levels differed significantly in terms of gender, mothers' working status and school type; there was no significant difference in terms of class level, mother and father education status. The internet addiction levels differed significantly only by gender. There was a weak and significant relationship on the negative side between the scores of internet addiction and the sum of emotional intelligence scale. Also it is obtained weak and significant relationship in the positive direction between the internet addiction and the scores from all the subscales of the peer bullying.
