The ideas of high school students and high school mathematics teachers relevant to effective mathematics teacher (Ankara city example)

The main goal of this research is to do a representation based on the ideas of High School Students and High School Mathematics Teachers relevant to ?Effective Mathematics Teacher?. In this research; data is collected from 73 mathematics teachers, who are working at state high schools which are connected to Ministry of Public Education in Ankara and 670 students, who are studying in these schools in 2011-2012 education year.A questionnaire is used in order to specify the ideas of mathematics teachers, in this descriptive research. The questionnaire is prepared seperately for teacher and students. The questionnaire for teacher is composed of two sections, which are specifying personal data and other data. Solely a questionnaire form is used for highschool students. The quantitative results of the research indicated that mathematics teachers and students are defines the ?effective mathematics teacher? in similar manner. Students agreed on ?reviewing the previous studies frequently?, ?having deep knowledge for the relevant subject? and ?to be self-confident and comfortable?, while mathematics teachers similarly agreed on ?to do clear explanations at the level of the student?, ?to be self-confident and comfortable? and ?having deep knowledge for the relevant subject?.On the other hand; the statements on which the least agreement is settled between students are ?to criticize frequently in order to motivate the students?, ?to do tests regularly during the lesson? and ?to be strict about class discipline?; and between teacher are ?to criticize frequently in order to motivate the students?, ?planning his teaching always in consideration of the exams? and ?to be strict about class discipline?.According to the qualitative results of the research; the properties indicated byhigh shool mathematics teacher for them to teach mathematics effectivelt ?communication?, ?having a good command of the subject? and ?knowledge of teaching principles and methods?In accordance with the research, it is foreseen that execution of new studies with teachers and students in these basic concepts with more comprehensive and wide samples would contribute mathematics educationKey Words: Highschool, Effective teacher, Mathematics teacher, student
