The relationship between cultural sensitivity and burnout levels of nurses serving patients from different culture

This study was conducted to determine how cultural sensitivity of nurses caring with patients from different cultures affected burnout levels. The study was conducted with 230 nurses working in a state hospital between March-May 2019. The necessary permissions were obtained for the research. Socio-demographic characteristics Form, Intercultural Sensitivity Scale and Burnout Scale were used in this descriptive study. Data were collected in 30 minutes with face to face interviews. In the evaluation of the data; In the analysis, t-test (Independent-t test) and Mann-Whitney U test were used for comparison of two-level variables according to whether the data were normally distributed or not. In three-level comparisons, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test according to whether the data was normally distributed or not. The relationships between continuous variables were examined by Spearman's rho correlation analysis considering that some data were not normally distributed. When the data obtained from the 200 nurses participating in the study is examined, 48.5% of the nurses are between 26 and 33 years old, 58.5% of them are married and 56% of them are bachelor or master graduates. In addition, only 27.5% of them know that they know a foreign language and 92.7% of them know that they know English as a foreign language. Again, when the data were examined, 48% worked in intensive care units, 98.5% cared for Syrian or foreign patients, 51.5% of the nurses did not determine the unit they work in, 88% said they liked the unit they liked and 73% liked their profession. When we look at 66% of nurses do not like to look at patients from different cultures, 14% of patients look at patients from different cultures, 92% of nurses have problems while looking at patients from different cultures, such as language problems, cultural differences. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between the burnout level and the intercultural sensitivity scale of the nurses.
