Abstract (EN)

In the modern era, while the Western tradition has made significant advancements in education, art, economy, technology, military, and political fields, the Islamic world has experienced a decline in these areas. The reasons for this decline have been extensively questioned, particularly in intellectual circles. Against this historical backdrop, Fazlurrahman emerges as a prominent twentieth-century Pakistani thinker who was well-versed in both Eastern and Western cultural values. He attributes this decline primarily to the failure of the Islamic world to develop a systematic interpretative approach to understanding the Qur'an. In this context, Fazlurrahman proposes a methodology that he terms the "double movement" which is rooted in the theory of revelation and the practices of early Muslims. The objective of this methodology is to address contemporary social issues based on the Qur'an's general moral values. Fazlurrahman, grounding his interpretative approach in Islamic literature, not only defends his perspective but also seeks to analyze and resolve contemporary issues in areas such as jurisprudence, sociology, economics, and healthcare within this framework. Within this scope, the primary focus of this study is to identify the fundamental sources and references of Fazlurrahman's interpretative approach to the Qur'an and tafsir by directly examining his works. The first chapter of the thesis explores the author's biography and interpretative approach, while the second chapter investigates both the foundations of this approach and its sources and references in relation to tafsir. Additionally, the conclusion section evaluates Fazlurrahman's interpretative methodology and the study's findings, while the appendix presents these findings in tabular form.
