Determınatıon of Gaziantep University student?s knowledge about breast cancer, how they perform breast examınatıon of ınvestıgatıon and education

This research has been performed to raise the sensivity and determine the current knowledge and attitudes and for the provision of the required knowledge of the female students being educated in University of Gaziantep on breast cancer and self breast cancer examination. The origin of this research are 3682 female students of Gaziantep University and samples are 1114 students. We performed pre-questionnaire in February-March 2011; then theoric, visional, implementary education has been given. One month after the education, students who showed up in the appointments have been given the same questionnare form and Health Belief Model Scale (HBMS).The 50,9% of the students are between the ages of 19 and 20; 94,9% are single; 48% of them were born in Gaziantep and around provinces; 34,8% of their mothers and 38,4% of their fathers are primary school graduates; 47,7% have 1-2 sisters; 75% have social securities.During the study, it has been found out that 6,1% of the students before the education; all of the students during observation had knowledge about the breast cancer and self breast cancer examination. It has been understood that 46,1% of them would have been approached to state hospitals before the education and 76,6% of them would have been approached to cancer research centers when they have problems about breast complaints or for control purposes; the 34,5% of them before the education, 98,8% of them during the observation had knowledge about that 1/8 of either women has breast cancer; 27,3% of them before the education knew 2 symptoms of breast cancer and during the observation all of them knew 10 symptoms of breast cancer; during the observation, all of them were aware of that the self breast cancer examination should start at 20s.; 16,4% of them before the education and 98% of them knew that the purpose of self breast cancer examination is to get to know her own breast surface better; during the observation, all of them were aware of that the self breast cancer examination should be done 5-7 days after the start of periods; During the examination, all of them knew that the duration of self breast cancer examination is 5 minutes.After the breast cancer and self breast cancer examination education, the sensivity, awareness, self-efficieny, health motivation, and beneficial perception which are sub-dimensions of HBMS have been increased and preventions dimensions have been decreased.
