Abstract (EN)

In the research, the relationship between the need for social approval, body satisfaction and social media usage purposes and social media addiction in young adults was examined. Young adults aged 20-35 living in Istanbul were "randomly" selected. The data was obtained through the "Google Form". It is based on volunteerism. "Personal Information Form" was used to obtain personal data of individuals, "Social Approval Need Scale" to determine their need for social approval, and "Body Satisfaction Scale" to determine body satisfaction levels. The "Social Media Use Purposes Scale" was used to obtain data on the social media usage purposes of individuals. The "Social Media Addiction Scale" was used to determine the social media addiction levels of individuals. According to the results obtained in the research; In the sub-dimension of the need for social approval, "leaving a positive impression", a significant difference was observed according to gender. Women's "making a positive impression" scores were found to be higher than men. There was a significant difference in body satisfaction and "general body satisfaction", which is one of its sub-dimensions, according to the marital status of the people. Body satisfaction and "general body satisfaction" scores of those who were in a relationship were higher than those who were single. Again, it was determined that there was a significant difference between men and women in the scores of "investment in body image", which is one of the sub-dimensions of body satisfaction. Men's body image investment scores were higher than women's. It has been determined that "entertainment", which is the sub-dimension of social media usage purposes, shows a significant difference according to age. Individuals in the "20- 25" age range use social media more for entertainment purposes than those in the "26- 35" age range. Again, "communication initiation", which is one of the sub-dimensions, shows a significant difference according to the marital status of the participants. According to this, single people use social media more for "starting communication" than those who are in a relationship. Again, looking at the results of the research, it was seen that the model established for the effect of social approval need, body satisfaction, social media usage purposes on social media addiction was significant. Accordingly, the "independent variables" of the research predict social media addiction as a whole, and the independent variables of the research explain 20% of the social media addiction variance. When the relationship between social media addiction and the need for social approval is examined; A positive and significant relationship was determined between the total score and the dimensions of sensitivity towards others, social withdrawal and leaving a positive impression. When the relationship between social media addiction and body satisfaction is examined; A "negative and significant relationship" was determined between the total score and the dimensions of investment in body image and overall body satisfaction. Keywords: Need for Social Approval, Body Satisfaction, Social Media Addiction, Social Media Addiction, Social Media Usage Purposes, Body Image.
