The examination of the indomitableness characteristics of the sight disabled students mothers

The aim of the research is to examine the the indomitableness characteristics of the sight disabled primary school students' mothers according to the several variables. The research consists of five sections: Introduction, Institutional Explanations, Method, Findings and Comment, Result Discussion and Suggestions.The research is applied to the mothers of the students at Türkan Sabancı Primary School for Sight Disabled Students affiliated to Üsküdar District National Education Directorate and Veysel Vardar Primary School for Sight Disabled Students in Sarıyer in İstanbul. The study is carried out with 305 mothers.In the study, a questionnaire and Mother Indomitableness Scale are conducted. The validity and the reliability of Mother Indomitableness Scale are analysed.In the questionnaire, frequency and percentage distribution delineating the demographical features of the mothers consisting of the research group ( age, educational background, perceived level of income, gender of the child, whether the child has any other disableness, anyone in the family has a disableness, the parents live together or not), and then, arithmetic mean and standard deviation rates are identified for the total scores of the scale. On the other hand, the groups are combined as there is insufficient distribution of the variables for the comparison analysis. In the sample, nonparametric techniques for the groups which don't have normal distribution features, and parametric analysis techniques for the groups which have normal distribution features are used.The original of Mother Indomitableness Scale is developed for the mothers who have children with mental disabilities by Kaner and Bayraklı (2010) and there are eight subchapters of the scale in the original one. These are Optimism- Conduct of Life, Bellicosity, Self-competence, Social Support, Motivation for Success- Aim, Being Open to New Ideas, Prediction of the Risks, and Social Competence. In the development progress of the original scale, as there are no mothers who have sight disabled children, validity and reliability processes are practiced by being loyal to the factor structure of the scale. As a result of the analysis, it is calculated that Cronbach's alpha coefficient is αT=.95 and Guttman ve Spearman values are G=,91; S=,91 with the half method. On the other hand, it is confirmed that correlations of the item-total and item-rest are meaningful and independent in the analysis done with Pearson correlation; items and factors are distinctive in the analysis done with Group T Test (lower-upper % 27). In addition, it is stated that the correlations between factors are meaningful. The scale is also applied to the same group every three weeks for the reliability, and test-retest and test correlation coefficient is seen as meaningful in positive aspects (rmin=.965; rmax=.997; p<,001). These results demonstrate that the scale is valid and reliable.According to the results of the research, especially level of income and existence of another disabled person in the family are effective among the factors influencing the indomitableness of the mothers who have sight disabled children. On the other hand, it is identified that gender and age factors don't have any impact on the continuous concern and life satisfaction of the parents. 106 of the participant mothers say that they have another disabled person in the family; 180 of them (% 62,9) say that there isn't any other disabled person in the family. It is understood that the existence of another disabled person in the family affect negatively the level of indomitableness of the mothers. It is important to provide necessary support and educational programmes for mothers' individual developments by taking into consideration the level of incomes and social support which influence the level of indomitableness of the mothers.Key Words: Indomitableness, İndomitableness of the Mothers, Sight Disableness, Special Education
