Examination of fine arts faculties by space syxtax and a model propound for flexible space design

There is a rapid transformation in many areas in line with changing living conditions and changing needs around the world. One of the disciplines that must remain up-to-date in the face of this transformation is architecture. In the discipline of architecture, the definition of space, the way it is designed, and its analysis and interpretation are important. The place is known for being lively and dynamic. Therefore, it needs to adapt to developing and changing conditions. When designed spaces become outdated, they may no longer serve their purpose. Therefore, the space should be designed to be flexible enough to change, transform, and meet the requirements of the age and user needs. At this point, the function of the space and the change in the user profile should also be taken into consideration. Within the scope of the study, the concept of flexibility is questioned through fine arts faculties, which are one of the educational venues. The feasibility of the education system is related to the potential of the educational space. The educational space should be designed flexibly to respond to the changing educational model. One of the educational buildings that need flexible building design the most is the faculties of fine arts, which include areas for artistic disciplines. Within the scope of the study, fine arts faculties in Turkey were discussed. All faculties are grouped according to their establishment dates, departments, and scopes. Later, the study was limited by determining the faculties established after 2000 and having more common departments, and the study was carried out there. The inability of fine arts faculties to maintain their current status in the face of changing conditions, lack of adaptation to function and user, and uniformity in educational structures pose problems. If sufficient importance is not given to the design of flexible spaces, buildings cannot resist time and change. This can reduce the efficiency of education. In this regard, spatial analyses were made for the fine arts faculties determined within the scope of the study. Space syntax analysis, which provides mathematical data, which are among the space analysis methods, observation-based behavioral mapping, and survey methods for user satisfaction, were used. The potentials of the space were determined by calculating the connectivity, integration, depth, and perceptibility values through 'depthmapx', one of the space syntax analysis programs in the selected fine arts faculties. Afterward, as a result of the observations made in the determined faculties, the usage period of the area, mobility, and density were determined, and behavioral maps were created. Finally, a survey was conducted in these faculties to determine user opinions and requirements of the space. In line with the data obtained, graphs and maps were created interpreted, and transferred to the study, thus completing the analyses for the space. On the other hand, through the literature study, the features that flexible space should have were determined as transformation, adaptability, mobility, modularity, and inclusiveness. As a result of all these, spatial needs were determined and these needs were associated with flexibility concepts, and a model proposal was created for the buildings to be built from now on.
