Memorization of the Qur'an and its preservation (The example ofKastamonu province)

This thesis examines the memorization of the Qur'an (ḥifẓ) and its preservation through the example of Kastamonu Province, aiming to identify shortcomings at every stage of this educational process and propose solutions. The scope of the study includes Kastamonu Hz. Pir Male Qur'an Course, Şehit Şerife Bacı Female Qur'an Course, Kastamonu Diyanet Academy Center Directorate, and Seydiler District Seyid Zülfikar Mahmut Naim Karaman Project Imam Hatip Middle School. Using a qualitative research methodology, we consulted instructors and administrators involved in Qur'anic memorization at these institutions. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews conducted at their institutions. The key findings are as follows: Qur'anic memorization entails not only retaining the words but also preserving its meanings within the heart and mind. Before embarking on this process, acquiring accurate pronunciation and fluency in reading are essential foundational steps. The preparation phase emphasizes frequent practice of reading from the Mushaf to achieve smoother and faster recitation. During the memorization phase, our research in Kastamonu revealed significant differences between Diyanet Qur'anic memorization courses and project-based Qur'anic memorization schools. Project schools select students based on their memorization aptitude, ensuring better compatibility with the program. Furthermore, factors such as the presence of a young teaching staff and the separation of educational spaces from dormitories enhance student motivation. These conditions render project schools more efficient than traditional courses. The memorization process requires support not only from the student's personal abilities but also from the educational environment and the guidance of instructors. The use of technology and the inclusion of social activities contribute significantly to this process. Moreover, preserving the memorized Qur'an requires continuous review, which must be maintained until the end of one's life. While individual effort is paramount, institutional support plays a crucial role. The Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı) has significant responsibilities in this regard. Strategies should be developed to monitor graduates of Qur'anic memorization courses or schools to ensure the preservation of their memorization.
