Abstract (EN)
Sleep is an important physiolological requirement such as eating, breathing and excretion. Therefore sleep quality directly affects individual's well- being, functional status and quality of life. This is a descriptive-cross sectional study which aims at evaluating factors that affect inpatients' sleep and sleep quality in hospitals. The research was conducted at 2 foundation university hospitals with 100 patients. We used "Socio-Demographic Questionnaire", "The Form of Factors Affecting Sleeping" (FFAS) and "Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index" (PSQI) as data collection tools. This study was approved by ethics committee. Statistical analysis were performed by SPSS. Mann-Whitney U Test, Kruskal-Wallis and Spearmean's correlation were used in the study. Mean age of the patients who participated in the research was 54.18±14.181. Patients' average FFAS score was 84.27±16.047. According to the results 91% of patients experienced a change in sleeping order, 82% was affected by noise in hospital and the most important cause of noise was other patients and companions (30%). 22% of patients defined their sleep as very bad. PSQI score average is greater than five in all age groups. We found significant difference between PSQI scores of the patients before and after disease (p<0.001). Consequently, this study revealed that the sleeping process of hospitalized patients was affected by noise negatively and their sleep quality was disturbed significantly. This study reveals that there's a need to assess sleep quality of inpatients periodically to make organisational changes and a need for nursing interventions to reduce factors disturbing sleep quality and to improve sleep quality.
