Analysis of the relationship between pain beliefs and fears of pain ofnursing students

In this study, relationship between pain beliefs and fear of pain of nursing students have been analyzing as descriptive. Data of the study have been collected from 391 voluntarily Nursing students in Faculty of Health Sciences of Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University at March-May 2019. Identifying characteristic form, pain beliefs questionnaire, fear of pain questionnaire III have been used for data collection. Analyzes of data have been performed with SPSS 22. For statistical analyzes, numbers, percentage, t test and ANOVA test have been used. Relationship between scales and sub-dimension scores have been analyzed with Pearson correlation test. In this study, it is found that avarage score of pain belief is  ±SS=3.15+0.56, avarage score of fear of pain scale is  ±SS=2.86+0.57. There is a avoidant weak relationship (p<0.05, r=-.105) between pain belief and fear of pain. According to this, fear of pain have been decreasing for the students who have higher pain belief. For the students who thinks that the reason of their fear is psychological such as depression and anxiety, their acute fear of pain have been decreasing (p<0.01, r=-.204) and their severe fear have been increasing (p<0.05, r=.107). For the students who think their reason of pain is organic reasons like physical injury and aggrievement, fear of minor (p<0.01, r=-.188) and medical pain (p<0.01, r=-.182) have been decreasing. In this work, it is found that there are significant differences between gender, current degree, situation of using pharmacological and non- pharmacological methods when they had pain and frequency of pain of the students and scale sub-dimension scores. Consequently, it is advices that pain beliefs and fear of pain should be included in the curriculum, pain evaluation and approaches to pain related applications hould be integrated.
