Men and women's roles in marriage in Christianity and Islam

This study examines the theological perspectives and teachings of Christianity and Islam on the roles of husband and wife in the context of marriage. The aim is to examine religious texts such as the Holy Bible and the Qur'an/Hadith by analyzing the writings of influential figures such as St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Ghazali and Imam Maturidi, it sheds light on the beliefs, values and foundations that shape the marriage relationship in Christianity and Islam. Thus, through a comparative theological lens, using descriptive and historical methods, it is aimed to identify the commonalities, differences and potential areas of dialogue between the two traditions and to enrich our understanding of marriage in a religious context. The study consists of three main parts that explore different aspects of marriage related to both traditions. In the first part, the Bible was examined and the teachings of Jesus and Paul and the views of Augustine and Thomas Aquinas have been researched. In the second part, the teachings about marriage in the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, which are the main sources of the Islamic tradition, are discussed. In addition, the views of well-known scholars such as Imam Ghazali and Imam Maturidi are evaluated, and important perspectives on the roles of husband and wife in the Islamic tradition are presented. In the third part, a comparative analysis is carried out by examining various themes between Christianity and Islam. Among these themes are the comparison of the creation stories about marriage and the development of an understanding of marriage on the basis of the position of women, the concepts of God's contract and civil contract, the issue of divorce, the debate on marriage versus celibacy, and the problem of husbands' leadership. As a result, similarities, differences and possible points of dialogue between Christianity and Islam on marriage and the roles of husband and wife were determined.
