Abstract (EN)

Aim: There is increasing evidence for the role of oxidative metabolism caused by oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder. The studies that compare oxidative stres parameters between active and euthymic patients with bipolar disorder are limited. However, in our literature search, we did not find any study examining oxidative metabolism and the level of oxidative DNA damage together in patients with bipolar disorder. In this study, we aimed to investigate oxidative metabolism and oxidative DNA damage in the periods of euthymic and active disease in patients with bipolar disorder.Method: In this study, 40 active and 40 euthymic period of disease of the 80 patients with bipolar disorder and 48 healthy volunteers were included in Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine Department of Psychiatry Mood Disorders Unit. Measurement of the levels of serum total antioxidant (TAS) and serum total oxidant (TOS), Oxidative Stress Index (OSI), and 8-hidroksideoksiguanozin (8-OHdG) levels calculations was performed in the laboratory of Biochemistry at the University of Gaziantep.Resuslts: In patients with bipolar disorder, TAS, TOS, OSI, and 8-OHdG levels were significantly higher than controls. In addition, when patients in the active and euthymic period were compared with the control group separately, in both groups TAS, TOS, OSI, and 8-OHdG levels were significantly higher than controls. However, there was no significant difference in TOS, OSI, and 8-OHdG levels between patients in the active or euthymic period of disease, but TAS levels was significiantly higher in active period than euthymic period of disease. There was significiant positive correlation between TOS, OSI, and 8-OHdG levels in patients with bipolar disorder.Discussion: Oxidants and DNA damage are high in patient with bipolar disorder. No difference of the oxidants and DNA damage between the active and euthymic period of disease reveals that oxidative stress damages on the body although the symptoms of the disease to quiet down. Oxidative metabolism and oxidative DNA damage in bipolar disorder need clinical investigations in larger group of patients.Key words: Bipolar disorder, oxidative stress, level of total antioxidant, level of total oxidant, oxidative DNA damage, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine.
