The effect of frostig developmental visual perception education program on visual perception levels of primary school first grade students

The research aimed to examine the visual perception levels of students attending the first grade of primary education. In this context, it was aimed to determine the effect of visual perception training on visual-motor skills within the scope. The study was designed as experimental research and effects of Frostig Developmental Visual Perception Education Program was evaluated within demographic variables such as gender, age, parental education level, previous preschool attainment and family income level. The sample group consisted of children between the ages of 5-7 and First Graders at a public primary school, —Dr Ayten Bozkaya Primary School— affiliated to the Ministry of National Education of Bursa. The study was designed based on screening-model sampling; in the 2017-2018 academic year. Once the results obtained through application of the pre-test to the experimental and control groups participating in the study, Frostig Developmental Visual Perception Training was given once a week within the visual arts classes of the experimental group; while no training was given to the control group. Following one week of the training of the experimental group; a post-test was applied to both groups. The research aimed to measure the visual perception skills of children before and after training, and examine, analyze and evaluate the developmental capacity and scope of visual perception. At the beginning, when the visual perception pre-tests applied to the experimental and control groups were compared, it was observed that there were no significant difference between the groups. However, upon the administration and training through utilization of Frostig Developmental Visual Perception Education Program, post-test results showed a significant difference between cohorts. When the results were compared based on demographic variables, no significant difference was found between the general visual perception levels of the students and their gender. In this study it was conclusively supported by the findings that Frostig Developmental Visual Perception Education Program contributed to the children's visual perceptive abilities positively.
