The evaluation of relation between math anxiety of primary school and teacher's attitude

There is a general assumption that students have anxiety and worry of math. Attitudes have great importance in the students? approach of liking or in failing math. Teachers are one of the main factors in the establishment of students? attitude against math. As teachers are effective bodies in the learning process of students. One of the major reasons of students? negative attitude against math is the lack of adequate correlation between the methods of teaching and ordinary daily life together with the teacher?s attitude decreases the people general opinion of math. In this study; the description and reasons of math anxiety are made with the collected data from various examined researches. Additionally the relation between teachers attitude and math anxiety is also examined as a contributor factor to students? fear of math. Finally, suggestions made to teachers to lessen and prevent the math anxiety. The ?survey? method used in the study. The surveys applied to the 4th and 5th grade students from the schools at the Istanbul Anatolian side. There is 280 participant students in the surveys. In the first section there is personal data and independent questions and in the second part there is 45 related and in the third section there is 25 related questions. The study made up of six part mainly introduction, theory, structure, method, findings, discussions and suggestions. As a result of studied is observed that there is a negative slight force relation between the teachers? attitude and ?math exam and evaluation? under level. There is also a negative slight force relation seen between the ?math anxiety? under level and the teachers? attitude level. Here are the some suggestions stemmed from the study; student, teacher and administration have different responsibilities as the main reasons of math anxiety could be ?student-related? , ?tutor-related? , and ?teaching methods-related?. Teacher?s role is not restricted with the transfer of the data and concept to students but to teach how to know via educational, sensual and psychomotor activities. The negative attitude and image against math increases the level of fear and math anxiety. School counselors, tutors and parents should try to alter this negative image by increasing the level of students? understanding of math. In the long term overanxious student should direct to counselor office and their misunderstanding of math has to change with the help of more advance methods of understanding and knowing math.
