Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to determine the daily life activities and sleep quality of patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillator and pacemaker. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between April 2022 and November 2022. A total of 60 patients, including 30 pacemaker and 30 ICD patients who met the inclusion criteria and received treatment in the cardiology department of a university hospital, were included in the study. The Introductory Information Form, the Katz Daily Life Activities Scale, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used as data collection tools. Face-to-face interview technique was used for data collection and the application of the data collection tools took approximately 15-20 minutes. The necessary permissions were obtained from the authors who conducted the validity and reliability study of the scale in Turkey, the Non-Invasive Research Ethics Committee, the hospital where the study was conducted, and the participants before the study began. Chi-square, Fisher Exact, Student t, One way ANOVA, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, Tukey, Pearson and Spearman's rho correlation tests were used for the statistical analysis of the data. The mean age of the patients included in the study was 63.7 ± 14.7 years (57.8 ± 15.6 for ICD patients and 69.7 ± 11.2 for pacemaker patients), and 51.7% were male, 80% had an education level of primary school or less, 91.7% lived with their spouse and children, 93.3% were not working, and 33.3% had a pacemaker or ICD implanted due to heart failure. It was found that the Katz Daily Life Activities Scale of married (p = 0.024) and those without any other chronic diseases (p = 0.037) among pacemaker patients were higher (p < 0.05) and there was no significant difference between PSQI and Katz scale scores with other variables (p > 0.05). Among the patients who underwent ICD implantation, those with an education level of primary school and below had lower sleep quality than those with an education level of high school and above (p=0.021), and there was no significant difference between PSQI and Katz scale scores with other variables (p > 0.05). Katz scale scores of pacemaker patients were found to be lower than those of ICD patients (p = 0.018), and no significant differences were found in other scale scores and interventions applied (p > 0.05). Based on these results, it may be recommended that socio-demographic characteristics and the presence of additional chronic diseases be taken into account when evaluating the daily life activities and sleep quality of patients with ICD and pacemaker.
