The effect of the pain management training given to cancer patients on patients related barriers to pain management

This study is a randomized controlled trial aimed at examining the effect of individualized pain education given to cancer patients, patient-induced barriers in pain management, and individuals in pain management. July and August 2021, the research was carried out in the Medical Oncology and Outpatient Chemotherapy Units of Koç University Hospital. A total of 110 cancer patients (54 control, 56 experiment) who were admitted to the hospital where the study was conducted and who agreed to participate in the study were included in the study. The "Patient Information Form", "Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale", "The Brief Pain Inventory" and "The Barriers Questionnaire (BQ-II)" scales were used as data collection tools in the study. The patients were given online training with printed educational material including pharmacological methods, interventional interventions and complementary therapies in the management of cancer pain prepared by examining the latest evidence. Participants from the intervention in the management of cancer pain patients as a result of the disease process and the development of tolerance", "immune system", "psychological side-effects", "fatalism", "dependency" and "physical side effects of" barriers and the worst, most mild, average and current pain levels decreased. The effect of pain on daily life activities has been reduced and the quality of life has been improved. As a result, it has been found that individualized pain training applied in this thesis study is an effective method for reducing patient-induced barriers and pain levels in the management of cancer pain. For effective management of pain, it is recommended that patient-induced disabilities be considered as part of routine care from the evaluation stage and that interventions aimed at reducing these obstacles be transferred to practice.
