Abstract (EN)

Vertical garden; It is a design phenomenon that emerged with the idea of designing vertical gardens on the facades of buildings with the help of carrier systems as a result of the decrease in the green area per capita in cities due to the increase in population density of plants that grow naturally in streams, riversides, rocks, caves and mountainous areas and environmental problems. As a result of the rapid population growth in cities and urbanization, the amount of green space per capita has decreased. This situation has made researches to gain sustainable cities important. Vertical planting; Reducing heat loss by ensuring that buildings are cold in summer and warm in winter, providing natural heat and sound insulation, removing dirt and dust from the air, keeping the urban climate in balance, creating a living environment in touch with nature in the city, contributing to the social environment of the city, creating a new environment for the citizens. It has many benefits, especially creating employment and increasing the aesthetic values of the city. Vertical gardens also make a great contribution especially to city squares. Within the scope of the thesis, the functions of vertical gardens that can be implemented in Istanbul are evaluated in terms of environmental, social and economic aspects, and it is aimed to develop suggestions that will contribute to the sustainability of the city and the applied square. For sustainable cities, sustainable vertical green system designs based on natural vegetation should be created, as can be seen in the examples of vertical gardens applied correctly in the world. The aim of this study is to spread the vertical gardens that can be applied in the squares and that are thought to give a different perspective to the square to be applied; It is to identify the facades that can be applied in the squares of Istanbul City where there is traffic and pedestrian density, and for this purpose, to offer vertical garden proposals suitable for the region and environmental conditions.
